recreation director marlane mckeewetheral was on hand to cut tfie ribbon marking the official opening of the 20000 struc ture which the local mens service club has been planning for two years the unit has been designed in two sectionsi and is joined by aiy ramp s the smaller part consists of low impact slides arid small scale equipment for children up to three years pfage- the larger section is made up of higher impact slides track rides and monkey bars for childrenup to 10 years of age kinsmen past president brian daley who chaired the committee responsible for the structure said his club was hoping the town might decide to name the park kinsmen park v the park is presently without an official name daley said he felt his club had provided a muchneeded facility for the area our original idea was to provide something which would serve to bring families together to have activities in the park which the whole family could enjoy it seems to have worked daley also said tiie bencheswould be installed at the side of the v new structure later this year v the stouffville kinsmen opened their new playground this past week at rupert park here the park is opened by kinsmen president bruce smith and brian daley right project chair who hold the ribbon for town recreation director marlane mckee wetherall to cut sonshine square supporters ask for reprieve from ministry julie caspersen staff reporter noonhour bible classes were banned from four whitchurchstouffville ele mentary schools by the ministry of education for the past two years the sonshine square club has operated optional lunchtime bible classes at orchard park and summitview public schools one day each week classes started at whitchurch highlands and ballantrae public schools last fall v parent patricia ratcliff speaking on behalf of the club said enrolment for the coming year is 348 these students attend the sonshine classes on a vol untary basis with parental approval and hear bible stories and play games v the ministry told us were not allowed to run this anymore ratcliff said vp -s- an aug 25 letter to york region board of education director bob cressman from the ministry of educa tion said according to miriisby policy religious instruction during the lunch breakis not rermitted but is allowed before or after the school day a fight to save the program which runs as an alternativeto other clubs such as sports arid drama groups runs deeper than maintaining the club to a battle for human rights ratcliff said the broader problem is parents being denied their rights stouffville school board trustee harry bowes his requested a meeting with the education minister marion boyd to speak on behalf of the parents and urge her to allow the club to continue seventy per cent of their taxes go to education why cant they use the schools bowes said parent beth boyd whose five chil dren attend the club at orchard park said petitions were handed outat local churches last sunday with a bigger thrust planned for next sunday but let- tefs written by individuals have a greater impact than a group effort and boyd urges residents to appeal to the ministry to save the club the club started at orchard park with a sign up membership of 15students but grew in popularity parents have said they want it principals agreed our trustee wants its and the kids are enjoy- ihg it boyd said according to the initial proposal to the board the club stresses such traits as love- temperance goodness and faith but does not focus on any one religion in particular but boyd said basic bible knowledge is friday it was the first time since rotating strikes began a few weeks ago that the location has been fully operational members of the canadian union of postal workers went back to work friday after a mediator was named to oversee talks between the union and canada post v labor minister marcel dams named justice alan gold as mediator gold agreed to accept the position on condi tion the rotating strikes would end mediation talks have been postponed until wednesday while gold breaks to celebrate jewish new year v local postal officials closed l their temporary depot fri- day and went back to
