5tr a on rotary club student exchang kate gilderdale correspondent after almost a year down under 18 year old jada myers returned to stouffville recently with a host of wonderful memories and a desire to see more of the world she was a participant in the rotary clubs student exchange program which helps to finance and organize trips to other coun tries for local teens giving them a unique insight into different cul tures and a broader perspective of the world they live in it really does make you grow up reflected jada not only did she learn about life in australia she also met exchange students from around the world there was a student from fin land and another from belgium and we became really good friends we definitely plan to get together again jada was based in the newcastle area of new south wales but she travelled extensively during her stay i had my melbourne and can berra trip with the exchange stu dents in november i also went to ayres rock and met some canadi ans at the top and we visited cobar pedy where all the homes are underground there was red sand everywhere she said it was like a desert the homes are large and they keep a maximum temperature of 23 all year so its quite comfortable in may the students went on a monthlong tour which included a trip down the coast of queensland and a visit to the great barrier- reef where they did some snorkelling that was really cool there were fish right beside you and you could touch everything it was quite amazing during her stay she attended a private catholic school run by priests which was very different- from anything she had experienced in canada jlt was quite disciplined but it was a good school as long as you followed the rules you were fine wearing a uniform took some getting used to she admitted but it was all part of the new experience the beach is a focal point of the social life in australia and there were six or seven within walking distance of where jada was staying culturally things are not very different from canada she noted they remnto the 60s down there and there are a lot more night clubs and pubs to go to they love cricket she added with a marked lack ofenthusiasm i hated it other popular sports include lawn bowling and rugby league and rugby union which are similar to football it really pays to invest with laurentian bank gic rates 12 months 875 16 months 9125 2 years 925 3 winterizing kit women were introduced into soci ety in a series of elaborate parties and dances but now its just something fun to do you get all s dressed up and go to a big dinner and dance it was a good night she found the people she met very friendly they liked to hear me speaking because of my accent but i got mistaken for an american alot she was homesick for about a month until she started school then i started meeting people and going out and i didnt have time to think about it another highlight of her stay was going to aninxs conceit in syd ney with two other exchange stu dents now
