please see page 12 the stouffville town spurs men soccer team won both a game and a goal keeper thursday night at the muggy rec centre field the spurs made it two victories in a row with a 31 win over brad ford fc in a sweatbath affair that had the players on both teams wilt ing from the heat by games end but just as important as the tri umph was the confirmation of ziggy reiter as the spurs fulltime goal tender reiter a forward had been asked to fill the vacant position when he pulled a muscle in his leg at the start of the season the team is undefeated so far with reiter recording shutout may23 and coming within a questionable last minute penalty kick of another ver sus bradford thursday spurs cocoach alfons rubbehs was delighted with reiters perfor mance thursday and says his net- minding problem has been official- ly solved ziggy made some super saves hes like a tiger out there and hes quite stylish as well hes a true athlete and hes finding his niche now he asked to take the goal keepers shirt home after the game so i think that means hes accepted the position after a scoreless first half in which the bradford team showed strong ball control the spurs travis white finally broke the stalemate sending a long kick past the bradford defenders into the bot tom right corner of the net david petramala playing his first game for the spurs after corning back from a knee injury then crossed the ball deep from the cor ner to tony pearse who headed it into the bradford net to make it 2- 0 chris quadrini rounded out the spurs assault when he broke through the middle deked the bradford defence and scored midfielder andrew stansfield impressed rubbens with his tireless effort in the heat he was a work horse out there a veteran who ran like a kid all night the coach was also happy with the sportsmanlike play of both teams it was good clean soccer i was so pleased to see they can stili play that way the spurs dont play at home again until june 13 when they take on the newmarket wanderers at 830 pm at the rec centre pitch spurnotes rubbens along with cocoach martin johannessen stouffville community track chairman ged stonehouse and family and around 30 young soccer players were pressed into sod lay ing service just before thursdays game it seems a truck load of sod ordered to cover the fringes of the soccer field dug up during the building of the new track arrived at 6 pm and was deposited on the east side of the main field the makeshift labor crew suc ceeded in removing the obstacle putting the grass in place before friday mornings potentially dam aging rainstorm rep team dream dashed for dunkeld cliff dunkelds dream of a sophomore level ladies rep softball team for this town has been inter rupted after just over a year but the patron saint of girls and ladies sport in stouffville will con tinue on undaunted assured that he was on the right track when he helped form the 18andunder squad last season the angies sophomores gave up the ghost last week after finding they just didnt belong on the same field as their older more seasoned competitors in the south lake sim coe ladies league it had become a matter not of whether the team would pull out but rather of when the blood letting would finally be allowed to end no young athletes should have to endure the constant thrashings on the field that the beleaguered angies players were suffering through especially when youre constantly coming up against older more experienced teams it was probably a bit of wishful thinking that led to the sophomore outfit being placed in among the lions in the first place unable to find a sophomore loop sport notes o r u c e r to hook into when they started up at the beginning of the 1990 season the angies outfit decided to join their intermediate older sisters the stouffville stingers in the 18-and- over intermediate level south lake simcoe operation bob gold stepped down as stingers coach to take over the angies crew the thinking being that his experience could help steady the upstart group dunkeld took over the coaching job of the stingers a position he had held several times in the past it was a rough year for the first year sophomores and when gold moved to fenelon falls debbie rennie was asked to take over the reins for the 1991 campaign which the thinking went would have to be an improvement over the inaugural season however the more talented mem bers of the team decided they would rather try to catch on with the defending south lake simcoe champion stingers and the angies team was left gutted and with little if any hope finally it was decided to pull the squad out of the league the angies girls have been entered into the towns bantam girls house league which will now have a viable four team flight so the angies girls will finally get to rediscover how much fun softball can be with an odds on chance of winning every time they take the field the ontario sophomore ladies championships which angies were to host this august will still be played here but without a local team hopefully such a high level of ball will prove a good drawwith- out the built in attraction of a home team fighting it out for the title not to worry cliff it was a noble effort and it sure beats standing still the oasa ontario amateur softball association 1991 official constitution and by laws booklet the whos who of
