p8 tribune i april 10 1991 st descendant of towns founder turns 90 this week kate gilderdale correspondent bertha stouffer a greatgranddaugh ter of stouffvilles founding father abraham stouffer celebrated her 90th birthday in style with family and friends last saturday at parkview village born on april 9 1901 she is the only surviving sibling of the seven children in her family and has lived in stouf fville all her life i was raised on the farm where the fairgate heights subdi vision is now i lived there until 1948 and then my parents and i lived in town she stayed on in stouffville after her parents passed away and eventually left her mill street home in 1986 when she moved to her present apartment at the village times have certainly changed since she was growing up bertha acknowledged in those days when we wanted to go somewhere my dad hitched up the horse or we walked it used to be when we went down town we knew everybody in the street but thats really changed its become far more impersonal she attended the two room school situated close to where sununitview was later built and left when she was is i taught piano classes for about 40 years for a few years i drove around and visited my pupils and when we moved into town i had them come to me ive met up with quite a few nice kids over the years and i still see some of my former pupils although she no longer teaches piano she still plays regularly in this build ing we have a choir and ive been play ing for them she explained its nice to keep your hand in otherwise you tend to drift away and lose interest the choir sang at the church service in the auditorium sunday night and we went over to the home and put on a little pro gram for them bertha is also involved in a group of quilters which meets weekly at the mis sionary church the money they make goes to a mission she noted brought up in a loving christian family she sel dom misses her sunday visits to church which have always been an integral part of her life i played the first organ that went into the church she recalled proudly she attributes her excellent health to the fact that she was born with a healthy body and has lived a simple life when i was younger all our food was fresh from the garden and the orchard and the farm she pointed out i think that probably had quite a lot to dowith it her travels have taken her out
