town teams havent exactly been papering the grey walls of the rec centre with provincial titlist pennant sin recent years its important to point out that the four teams are made up exclusively of female players actually there would have been a fifth town team rounding out the stouffville juggernaut had the betz pools senior bs not lost a 10 heart- breaker to orangeville the other week in the central ontario final the two teams had played to a pair of ties previous to the deciding match according to steve upton the proud president of the whitchurch- stouffville girls hockey associa tion the wsgha had never even iced pee wee atom or intermedi ate girls rep squads until two sea- sport notes sons ago but the upward climb began immediately and continues to gain speed the atoms in their initial year as a team qualified for the provincial tournament but fell short last spring the pee wees who were the same atoms moved up a notch went as far as the all- ontario semifinals the senior cs also made the trip this time around as the momen tum continues to build it will be the angies pee wees the ring- wood variety intermediate cs the credit union atom all stars and the angies senior ds close to 100 girls taking to the ice this season the wsgha is close to realizing its goal of being able to sustain both a healthy house league program and a full platoon of rep level outfits upton realizes there is still a way to go however in selling the con cept of girls hockey to both the young females and most munici palities this is now the only centre for girls hockey in york region he told me the other day were open an even keel now but we need to interest more players to continue to allow for a full program kings beat rangers in sihl semifinal playoffs paul barry fired a pair of what he and summerhill would like to see emerge throughout the system weve been able to form the pee wee rep team from our junior house league and still have a rela tively good house league and it seems that everything the local association tries lately turns out to be a success the atom all stars which were put together this past december skated their way to the finals in their first ever tourna ment at the years end then placed second once again in a tourney in orangeville losing out to the host team however the local ladies exacted their revenge as they overcame orangeville in the central ontario finals earning them their ticket to ississauga this friday upton admits he would like to see some more players on the scene especially at the lower levels we need more girls at the bottom to keep the younger levels going as the girls climb up our direction is also to have more stouffville area girls involved but for now its eyes straight ahead as upton and all the other wsgha
