carnival organizers hoping for snow theyll try again this weekend with the organizers of the 1991 snopitch winter carnival confi dent that winter wont abandon them as it did earlier this month looking competition is sure to bring out the talent of the local citizenry there are dog sled races saturday afternoon and hayrides sunday at sport notes 11am the snopitch championships are slated for 2 pm sunday a chat with dave winn father of chris uxbridge bruin forward and exstouffville clipper at the uxbridge arena during a recent bruins playoff game provided me with the answer to a question that had been burning for a few months chris had always reminded me of a bull who had just been let out of his stall and into the ring when he came onto the ice he would combine the boister- ousness of an eddie shack with a talent level which while definitely not at the superstar plateau had kept him on the junior c bruins roster for three years as this season progressed chriss name began to appear more and more on the score sheet under the goals category and less and less on the penalties side he even lit the lamp twice in some games such was his ne found scoring prowess and he was definitely picking his spots flicking the puck into the net in the last second of one game to give the bruins a onegoal victory 1 why the turnaround i kept ask- ing myself well the answer came when dave told me his 19yearold off spring is in the home stretch of a twoyear law enforcement and security course at georgian college inbarrie he has applied for a position with the durham york and halton region police forces as well as the toronto force it turns out the recruiting officer for one of the forces said hed like to comeand see chris play hockey since then chris has been concen trating on his goal scoring leaving the enforcer stuff to the others he hasnt changed that much really insists dave he s just minding himself he tends to back off when the rough stuff starts as we spoke the bruins and their ajax axemen opponents were in the process of turning a sunday afternoon hockey game into a roller derby exhibition but as his father had said chris was one of the few who were showing restraint his new found maturity demonstrating that he certainly would be good jpolice officer material he even scored a goal to con tribute to the 102 bruin romp as he played on a line with fellow stouffvillites paul sinclair and jason underwood who werent having the same kind of luck as chris when it came to avoiding the penalty box on that afternoon winn stands to make a big contri bution as the bruins who ended up in first place in the central ontario league standings pursue the league championship over the next few weeks v his enthusiasm and his scoring touch along with his increasing restraint will give him an edge in a league where players often lose their cool at the slightest provoca tion iv
