christmas cards to soldiers stationed in the gulf he decid ed to do something about it i was watchtog commander tom one morning and he said the soldiers werent going to be with their families at christmas so i sent a card in to his delight and amazement he received a reply on jan 23 i am sorry that this letter will take so long to reach you but the mail is very slow wrote his new pen pal my name is mark wiseman i am in the army with the 101st airborne division he enclosed his address and asked jamie to write back to him jamie replied the same day and has promised to keep the tribune up to survey the devastation caused by the june 1990 earthquake the delegation were there to explore possible mcc assistance in rebuilding damaged facili ties in the area between 40000 and 50000 were killed in the quake and 100000 families were left homeless a number of towns and villages were com pletely flattened during their stay in iran the four delegates were hosted by the iranian red crescent society the equivalent of the red cross and met with representatives from the ministries of health arid housing we were very impressed by the sense of selfreliance among the people we met and with their determination to reconstruct their lives following the earthquake said mr burkholder many people were living in temporary prefab housing and even shipping containers but their spirits were not dampened there was a tremendous drive to carry on it was quite moving to see their desire to reconstruct most people they met were deter mined that iran should retain a neutral stance in the light of impending war in the gulf the team left the country on jan 13 after all they had just come through eight years of war with iraq mr burkholder pointed out iranians they talked to expressed appreciation for the mcc visit and their offer of assis tance one person they talked to during their visit observed the super powers have been trying to keep us apart but today we have found each
