p4tobunejnovember im m l st mmm news item queens park to cut down sunday shopping a time to remember stouffville as always offered a fitting tribute last sunday to those who fell for their countries during the war years local veterans dutifully laid wreaths poppies were placed on the crosses at stouffville ceme tery all in the name of the silent young heroes who went off to war in a foreign place to fight for their democratic nations and in similar ceremonies across the country people paused to honor their war dead however this remembrance day carried with it a quiet but powerful reminder ofthe canadi an men and women currently fac ing the threat of war in the middle east in the face of dwindling hope for a diplomatic solution to the iraqi invasion of kuwait some of those men and women will one day be honored in similarfashiori in stouffville and uxbridge we have families hoping for the safe return of their children from serv ing in the middle east and our communities share that hope but their cause is as righteous as any during the world wars this year we remember the liv ing a suckers life and a new contest okay i admit it im a sucker im a pushover a dupe an easy mark and if pt barnums fabled phrase holds true theres one just like me born every minute ive always fallen for the old whats that on your shirt rou tine so some funny person can flick me on the nose i always look when people say over there and im usually the unwitting straightman to amateur comics who are trying to make others laugh why just recently someone told me of a young hockey play er who injured a leg during a big game the player who showed promise i wastold left the leg unattended and it eventually developed gangrene resulting in a diagnosis that said at random steve houston amputation would be necessary to add to this promising young players woes a surgical team inadvertently amputated the wrong leg consequently the promising young player was left with neither limb because the gangrenous leg had to be removed as well when i snorted in disgust and said the young player should seek substantia legal damages for the surgical teams inept- ness i was promptly told he doesnt have a leg to incompetent surgical team there was just me left holding the bag so to speak very funny indeed in retrospect i did chuckle and have since tried the joke on others im hagpy to report many respond perfectly to the pitch so i dont feel that silly but im more than your aver age sucker i am routinely hood winked by government bodies who promise me freedom for a editors mail buck if i would simply spend money on their lotteries well ive spent about a thou sand times more than that in the past and im not financially free in fact ive sort of been given a life sentence by my bank branch visa centre insurance man etc meanwhile i thought i had about 199 million good reasons to win that recent 649 jackpot which made millionaires out of 18 lucky souls it turns out i have a better chance of being stuck by lighte ning twice im foolish lknow but its heartening to know that there is another like me born every minute thank goodness for people like pt barnum who put it in some sort of
