stouffville district secondary school sdss spar tans senior boys basketball team pulled another rabbit out of the hat thursday in the school gym the sdss cagers after steal ing a game two days earlier with only six seconds left on the clock overcame a one point deficit with less than a minute remaining to nip st roberts 4745 the junior spartans couldnt harness the same magic however as they lost their fifth straight game of the season falling 5250 to st roberts this time it was kevin harmer winning it at the foul line for the senior spartans giving stouffville the victory in a game that saw the lead change hands on numerous occasions the spartans led 2925 at the half then maintained their composure in the third and fourth quarters the stouffville squad made the most of their foul shots in the late going with harmers pair in the final minute proving to be the deciding factor harmer racked up a total of 17 points to lead the spartans scorers travis white hooped 12 points and karam amer was good for 10 cam harden anchored the defence while chipping in with four key points were cruising in the right direction said spartans coach jim fletcher after the game their second win of the season after opening with three losses the boys are starting to gel the junior spartans took a slim 2625 lead into the second half of their game but then had trouble with a st roberts press which saw the visitors grab a nine point lead the sdss squad battled back to trail 4948 with 30 seconds left in the game but the spartans fouled in two attempts to regain the ball with their opponents scoring both times to up their lead to four a final basket in the dying seconds was too little too late for the spartans dan wilson headed the sdss point getters with 15 brian leoni went to hoop for 14 and fred klein had seven points spartans coach andy cherkas felt his team had been weakened significantly by in juries that kept three of his starters out of the game mike greathead has a broken wrist and drae glover and jason hollin are out with injuries as well that hurt us goodwood cut off by stouffville minor softball program bruce stapley correspondent the writing is on the wall as far as goodwoods 12 year affiliation with the whitchurchstouffville softball association wssa is concerned the wssa has told the executive of the goodwood minor softball association gmsa that effective either in 1990 or 1991 they will be cutting them adrift and while wssa officials say its simply a matter of looking after their own towns increasing population requirements the goodwood people are not convinced weve been eliminated said gmsa representative dave wilson in response to the decision were hoping that with public pressure we may be able to get back in however wilson said his group has sent letters to whitchurchstouffville town council uxbridge council and both the wssa and gmsa at this point were trying to be low key to work behind the scenes said wilson wssa president mike davies says his executive has been fair and is just doing what has to be done its uncertain as to what will happen this coming summer but the affiliation with goodwood will end for sure in 1991 we thought that by telling them now it would give them time to make another arrange ment he said we had a waiting list of 25 stouffville players who couldnt play last summer said davies and there are new people moving to whitchurchstouffville all the time wssa secretary mary myers who accompanied davies when he went to inform the goodwood ball people of the decision to close the door on them says the facilities are already strained theres no more diamond time we suggested that they form their own league or that perhaps they could interlock with us but the way ball is growing in this town we have to take care of our own tax payers first uxbridge councillor susan para sees a few options for the good wood ball program but says that allowing goodwood to remain in the wssa scheme of things for 1990 will give them the required time to make the necessary adjustments para says goodwood might be able to go in with claremont which will also be getting the squeeze from the stouffville system and that the league could also include teams from eastern towns such as port perry and it may mean making better use of our existing diamonds having some teams play their home games in smaller towns with an underused diamond sdss volleyball coach livid over double- a criticism it would appear that a recent story in the sports page of a newmarket newspaper has stouffville district secondary school sdss volleyball guru jim fletcher more than a little bit hot in fact livid would be the best word to describe fletchs state of emotional being after be ing shown the article which ac cused him of being narrow minded in defending the deci sion to enter his durhamyork dyssaa championship spar tans into doublea competition this year rather than upgrading to triplea just cant believe someone would say we took the easy route to the dyssaa title this year said fletcher and that we were just trying to avoid the teams that could beat us he pointed out that it is essen tial that a person understand the rationale behind the rating system as well as his personal approach to competition and fairness before they start taking their cuts he agrees with the separation of schools based on student population simple percentages would suggest a school with 2200 sport notes bruce stapley students such as markham district high school should have a stronger talent base than one with 730 the sdss total if you lump all the good teams together in one division you are going to deny a lot of kids the op portunity to go to both the regional and durhamyork championships as well as the all- ontarios he said so having stayed in doublea fletcher as is his custom lined up as many tiplealevel tour naments as he possibly could for his seniors realizing that you learn by losing to great teams sure its a little easier at the lower levels in doublea flet cher concludes but ultimately if you are good you end up playing the best teams in the province whether you are doublea or triplea
