editors mail the tribune wednesday november 15 1989 p5 remembrance day needs more publicity dear editor recently i read in your newspaper an editorial on remembrance day this topic seemed to suggest that many people have forgotten or dont know why canadians have remembrance day horsehockey i believe that in canada more young people every year are be ing taught and learning the who what where when and why of remembrance day i dont believe for one minute any child or adult in canada over the age of food collection a bandaid solution dear editor in the letters to the editor sec tion of the toronto star last month there was a letter entitled collect food for hungry at grocery stores prompted no doubt by the recent food drive for the daily bread food bank the writer suggests that pro viding bins in major grocery stores would make it easier for people to donate food where and when they buy their groceries vandalism irks reader dear editor when i went down to clare- monts four corners on friday morning i was absolutely furious at the sight i saw a burnt black mess on the ground which the day before was a colorful array of about 15 halloween scarecrows and effigies what a shame after a group of claremont lionesses and youngsters got together and made the four corners very effec tive in the spirit of halloween and added to the custom of decorated homes for halloween that has grown in the last few years how can young males or females walk around our nice village with a clear conscience after doing such a rotten trick it was not at all funny if thats what they thought it is illegal to start any fire and as there were witnesses to this act some names were submitted these young people could be in trouble and they are certainly deserving of punishment look out kids and try behaving yourself in the future there is certainly no fun in vandalizing anything if you are a parent of such a youngster try to have more con trol over your kids the lionesses are to be com mended for their display and con gratulated on their perseverance in making more as this was done about a week before halloween i would like to add my personal comments to all the homeowners for their unique and humorous display in front of their homes they are great rene rennie claremont fill our mailbox the tribune welcomes letters from readers on current topics letters should be 500 words or less and typed or neatly printed they may be subject to editing for length at the discretion of the editor they must be submitted by 5 pm friday to appear in the wednesday tribune letters may be submitted to the office at 54 main st w stouff- ville po box 40 l4a 7z4 i am wholeheartedly in favor of this but doubt if the requirements of the food bank could be met in this way unless considerable pro motion were to be done by the respective managers of grocery stores for many years the ecumenical outreach commit tee of stouffville represented by members of the local presbyterian united roman catholic and anglican churches has been supervising the collec tion and delivery of food placed in baskets provided at iga and ap giving the people of stouff ville an ongoing opportunity to help however i have always felt that considering the number of families living in stouffville a- far larger quantity could be col lected so perhaps the writer of the letter in the star is correct when he says since well buy all the extra food we donate from the grocery store itself it could actually be profitable for the grocery stores to sponsor the program the necessity for food banks is repugnant but until all levels of government come to terms with the underlying reasons for pover ty the lack of affordable housing being one and do something about it the problem will con tinue to grow j nailer stouffville reason cant tell you why we have this very special day the problem in my opinion with poor attendance at the memorial service lies with the media and this town the royal canadian legion branch 459 stouffville is a service club did you know that i doubt it did you know how their profits are spent how many people they employ how many hours months years volunteers from this legion have given to serve their community do you know anything about the royal cana dian legion i doubt it i could go on but is there really any sense the news media serving this community stinks we receive six newspapers a week from two sources here in town would it be possible for just one copy twice a bridal show a big success dear editor i wish to express my thanks to the stouffville welcome wagon and especially dianne darling for the lovely bridal show they hosted monday oct 16 this event held at the maples of ballantrae golf and country club on hwy 48 was very well- attended the other show sponsors from the stouffville community displayed many useful ideas that im sure will help every bride-to- be plan a perfect wedding the highlight of the evening was the fashion show the models looked very elegant in their wedding gowns and tuxedos once more a big thank you to dianne for hosting such an enter taining show m yours truly carolyn engelsman bridetobe 7 specially designed toning tables munity a clearer and much sooner notice of an event somehow i doubt that too and please dont give me that garbage about we cant print what we dont know you would know if you took the time perhaps with more media atten tion you could print with pride stouffville legion overflowing at remembrance day service as for the town unless its free and of course council agrees which i doubt they wouldnt at tend promote or even think about attending any function unless of course it is absolutely necessary and to their advan tage or to raise taxes or to open another restaurant i cant remember when the local media or council had the courage or the ambition to say we could and should do more bill bell stouffville family appreciated sympathy cards dear editor the family of the late mrs helen mcewan
