more editors mail the tribune wednesday november 1 1989 p5 fluoride story oversimplified dear editor i would like to clarify several items in your recent article students teeth show effects of fluoridefree water the purpose of the study which was undertaken by the york region health department in 198889 was not to determine the effect of fluoride in the schools water supplies but rather to determine what differences if any exist between the dental health of children in york regions urban south and more rural north ten schools were included from the north and a random sample of 10 schools was chosen from the south a number of factors probably contribute to this difference in cluding the use of fluoridated toothpaste access to dental care and the fluoride status of the water supply or the use of fluoride supplements in non- fluoridated areas to say that the students teeth show the effects of fluoridefree water oversimplification is a great stoner is defended by claremont area reader dear editor for the record in response to john marks letter of your oct 4 issue both lome almack and norah stoner were present as sup porters of those opposed to the proposed new whitevale pickering dump at the meeting which attracted hundreds to the pickering recreation centre last june ms stoner provided a well- documented rebuttal to durham regional chairman gary her- remas defence of the dump and received a standing ovation for her effort from my knowledge of ms stoner s position in this she has been after living here for more than 15 years consistently averse to needless violation of diminishing greenlands in this part of southern ontario as a member of provincial parliament and on pickering council mr herrema and ms stoner are liberals but they dont agree with one another about the pro posed pickering dump bruce findlay rr 2 claremont in order to determine the im pact of fluoridated water one would have to do a study which would control for the other fac tors which affect dental health in cluding fluoride status from birth use of toothpaste use of dental services and use of fluoride supplements the article implies that this study received special funding from the ministry of health and the region this was not the case as the information was collected as part of the departments regular screening and referral program in late 1987 the ministry of health introduced a new program which ensures that no elemen tary school children are denied needed dental care because of financial circumstances or lack of dental insurance children who are found to be in need of treatment by the health department are eligible for free treatment at either of the two clinics which are operated by the health department or from their family dentist the new schoolbased program will provide individual preven tive services for children who would not otherwise receive these very important services treatment services fillings will not be provided in the schools dr m
