night the betz pools mens fastball team threw the ball around as if it was a grenade ready to explode and the end result was a 41 victory vfor the visiting greenbank gamblers 5 the horror story began in the second innning with a greenbank runner reaching base on an error a tailormade double play grounder turned to dust when the second base umpire ruled betz second baseman terry haviland didnt step on second base before throwing the ball past first baseman gary vaughan sj the greenbank baserunner thinking he was out at second started fto walk off the field and only returned to the base when his team mates started yelling for him to go back two wild pitches later john jeffs blasted a two run home run to put greenbank out front 20 s the gamblers added two more runs in the third while only collec ting one hit as errors did in the betz boys once again betz pitcher john annis limited the visitors to two singles the rest of the way and the defence tightened up k but the pools platoon were only able to scratch for four singles off greenbank pitcher russ korbak with george burkholders fourth in nning base hit scoring mark joslin who had singled and advanced on john taits walk gary grant had betzs other two safeties g betz coach dave webster felt annis had pitched a strong game but that he was done in by the uncertain fielding it was an excellent pit- jching effort we just made some errors we were short players and 5we had some guys playing where they dont usually play j despite the loss betz remained in first place in the oshawa and district mens league with a record of 12 wins greens signs monday night at the town park by bruce stapley bob french the dean of baseball umpires in the stouffville area jhas come a long way since that day in 1967 when he was grabbed out of the stands and asked to fill in for an ump who failed to show for a game t french an 18 year goodwood resident who has just moved into 5 stouffville will head out to prince george british columbia this month to umpire the senior mens slopitch tournament 5 he will be the only umpire from ontario selected to work the com- jpetition which will include some of the best slopitch teams in the country s the tournament will be the second toplevel competition he has worked in three years he is hopeful he might reach the ultimate jpinacle in terms of qualifications for umpires after his summers effort im currently a level four umpire level five is the highest you can go and you have to have done two nationals to get that level i acould come out of the national tournament in prince george with my level five and if he did he would indeed be in select company there are only 2 two level five umpires in ontario according to french s along with al piette and cliff dunkeld french formed the gjwhitchurchstouffville umpires association in the mid 1970s he was jithen asked to represent stouffville for the ontario amateur softball association umpires group in 1980 since that time french has been active teaching umpires in the area that spans the area from peterborough to highway 48 from lake ontario to beaverton 5 he has served as zone umpire in chief for the past three years and his job includes lining up umpires for all oasa tournaments in the zone i try to use as many local people as possible he says you have to get the right people for the right games people who arent afraid to make the big decision in that important game f and this is in addition to his own umpiring duties that sees him working games as a member of the whitchurchstouffville umpires 0 association as well as the uxbridge and oshawa associations ill umpire as many as 13 games a week plus weekend tour naments i do everything from house league games through the betz pools games and im away just about every weekend while his umpiring duties sound like a full time job french spends his days setting up offices for guaranty trust and helping with their financial planning he was previously a trader on the floor of the toronto stock exchange he has three children including a seven year old who plays in the towns house league softball program at the mites level i try to get out to watch his games im one of the loudest fans at the games does he ever razz the umpire no way he insists he feels umpires have already got enough detractos and that peo ples inability to how understanding to a new umpire has caused the current shortage of officials in the stouffville area the past five years we have had almost no new umpires in our local association we ran some junior umpiring programs last year but none of the people who took the programs came back umpires take seven years to get it down they are not perfect at first but everyone expects them to be and even after 20 plus years as an umpire french admits to his own shortcomings the day i umpire a perfect game will be the last one i do because ill never do it again a level two baseball coach himself who spent many years coaching in goodwood french feels it is important that the coaches provide their young players with a good example there is often a double standard with coaches on the one hand they are telling kids to respect authority but then the coaches themselves get on the umps case french sees the day approaching when he will have to hang up the mask my current level of involement is not by choice but we just cant get other people to do it but soon the knees wont be able to take the bending and hes hopeful others will be found perhaps by chance as was the case with himself hopefully there are other parents out there who will get dragged out of the stands like i was trailing 98 going into the sixth inning greens batted around to take a 169 lead into the final frame greens pitcher kathy tail held on to snuff the action bid to regain the lead in the seventh limiting the opposition to two runs turner and tait had three hits each the two stouffville teams have split their two games played against each other this season the greens held on to eke out a 99 tie with newmarket wednes day on the road in a game shortened to three innings due to rain stephanie summerhill and nicole bardell scored two runs each for stouffville and melissa dawson had a threestrikeout pit ching effort the greens squirts will host a squirt girls regional tourna- ment this weekend with the top three teams advancing to the on tario provincial championships the tournament which begins friday night at the town park will include 11 teams from as far away as kingston belleville and burlington the greens squirts will play their first
