gibson is retiring after 21 years he says hell miss hes retired another turn for roads man bruce stapley correspondent july 31 will mark the end of the road for whitchurchstouffville roads superintendent ron gibson and the 21year veteran with the knack for getting along with people says hell miss the every day exchanges with town residents after hes retired ill miss the people thats for sure says the 60yearold mr gibson who took on the job in 1968 after 14 years spent in maintenance and public works at queens park if you got one thank you a week but of 300 calls that was always enough mr gibson claims he always tried to be responsive to citizens who phoned him with suggestions or complaints you let them have their say after all youre dealing with the people who are paying your salary youve got to satisfy these people mr gibson was born in cann- ington and moved to toronto when he was 14 he served as a carpenter in the city for four years before taking the job at queens park when lie saw the opening for the roads superintendent posi tion in stouffville he applied for it and was selected then we moved to stouffville lock stock and barrel married to wife audrey mr gibson has three sons and two grandchildren he recalls when he first took over he was only required to ser vice the village of stouffville it was before regional govern ment there were only three of us on staff and we had a halfton pick up a twoton dump and a tractorback hoe the works department he recalls was an office in the municipal building with the garage below where the present- day clerk has his office they built a new works facili ty in 1970 and then they went regional which united the town with the rural areas a rural facility was established in vandorf and all the equipment from the various areas was com bined under mr gibsons leadership parks and water then came to fall under his jurisdiction and through the years mr gibsons responsibilities continued to increase we now have 70 acres of parks to look after weve doubled our machinery in the last five years weve got much better equip ment since we went regional we have more of it and it is better quality mr gibson takes pride in the fact his department has never had an accident and he attributes much of that safety record to his staff ive got a very good group of employees some have been here 15 years as of late mr gibsons staff in cludes 10 fulltime people along with two summer employees bor rowed from the towns recrea tion centre and eight parttime summer students he feels his job requires pa tience in dealing both with people and problems if there is a break in the water main it doesnt just fix itself and you must always let the people know that you know what you are doing the ratepayers he maintains have always given him full sup port although he recognizes that growth has brought a new breed of citizen to town theres a different type of ratepayer here now however mr gibson claims he has no specific retirement plans although he says hell always find something to keep him busy the corporation of the town of markham committee on race and ethnocultural equity of markham take notice that applications
