balk at smaller windows matt niciiolls correspondent senior citizens living in a sub sidized apartment at 325 elm rd are continuing their fight to halt apartment renovations that their spokesman says are dangerous and potentially lifethreatening john dittrisch a secondfloor resident in the threestorey seniors complex said seniors are prepared to fight a york regional housing authority plan to replace two large sliding glass doors in second and third floor apartments with tiny sliding windows the new windows will decrease ventilation making it harder for seniors to breathe dittrisch said these new windows are for healthy people not for seniors he said they are little more than a few inches above the minimum that the government allows government specifications say windows must exceed 432 square inches in area dittrisch said the new windows are 600 square inches but dittrisch isnt satified thats a big difference from the old sliding doors which were 2540 square inches dittrisch said they said the reason they were installing the windows was to beautify the home and save energy how can you save energy when you have these little peep holes but york regional housing authority acting manager valerie brown said the new win dows meet building standards and are not a threat to residents local mp bill ballinger who participated in a public forum at the building on may 30 said the new windows pose no threat to residents when i left the public meeting may 30 it was unanimous that the changes be made he said z ballinger said a new internal ventilation system will be install interview last week stouffville fire chief bill brown said the temporary disruption did not seriously affect the fire department but local ambulance service which works on a different line than the fire department was affected by the interruption the lines were totally unreliable said uxbridge- stouffville ambulance service spokesman pete carell carell said the disruption af fected the uxbridge business venture was rejected last month by the whitchurchstouffville chamber of commerce i have yet to receive a valid reason for this rejection the secondyear politics student at queens university says i know kids my age and they seem to be running into red tape everywhere but it seems to me they didnt even know what the rules were in june mr wallis decided to start a summer business under the ontario ministry of skills and developments youth venture capital loans program his plan was to provide local youths with lowcost community dances which he says the stouffville recreation commit tee had not considered this year to generate more income for his university expenses centre for 100 per night charg ing a minimal fee to cover per sonal costs and hopefully make a small profit the idea was geared as a sup plement to his sloanhour sum mer job he says but the chamber of commerce rejected walliss proposal stating that he hadnt done enough research i couldnt understand that because ive organized youth dances in the past he said mr wallis said he has organiz ed dances at the community cen tre for the rec committee and sdss high school and everything had gone well but whitchurchstouffville chamber of commerce president susan myers said mr wallis past experience was not the issue an imcomplete application and a rushed proposal was this is the first application we turned down and its because we didnt agree with his idea for instance ms myers said she knows its impossible to rent the community centre for only under the student venture pro gram a student receives a 3000 s100 a night loan to startup a summer and she said mr business the loan must be repaid in full by the beginning of september and the chamber of commerce in the students town must ap prove the business venture before the loan is secured wallis claim lhat the chamber of commerce didnt know anything about the youth ventures program was inaccurate weve had a number of students involved with the pro gram over the last few years pjiolossjoerd witteveen claremont collision a 75yearold scarborough man was sent to hospital with serious injuries monday afternoon when the car in which he was a passenger was hit by a dump truck on brock rd at regional road 5 near claremont the car pulled out onto brock rd from rd 5 but its rear end was caught by a southbound dump truck the 1 986 buick was flung into the southeast ditch the driver of the buick 67yearold sarah rowe of scarborough suffered minor injuries the driver of the dump truck 35yearold kosta todorobski also of scarborough was uninjured mrs rowe is charged with careless driving in the photo above rescue workers carry the passenger of the buick to a waiting ambulance inset mrs rowe is escorted from the accident by rescuers shouldnt have but the chamber of com merce didnt realize certain things about the program either he said shane recovering but becoming restless matt niciiolls correspondent the long road to recovery con tinues for stouffville teenager shane stapley the 15yearold youth who suf fered severe burns to 45 per cent of his body has been through the worst of it shanes father tribune reporter bruce stapley said in an interview the burns resulted after shanes gas- stained clothes were accidently lit on fire at a local gas bar last month shane is currently recovering in the intensive care unit at the hospital for sick children in toronto he had a really good weekend last week and the last skingrafting session took place this week mr stapley said but hes finding getting into a routine hard mr stapley said his son is ex periencing periods of emotional and physical restlessness and his mobility is limited every shift in position is a major operation for him he said but hes coming along doctors expect shane to be removed from intensive care by next week to keep busy shane has been playing video games on tv mr stapley said a friend gave him an inlellivi- sion video game to use and he really enjoys baseball he said while doctors arent sure when shane will be able to leave the hospital a target date has been set at mid to late august mr stapley said but well have to see what happens he said its hard to say right now mr stapley said a trust fund which was set up on shanes behalf by the main st branch of the bank of nova scotia will help pay for medical costs after shane is released from hospital shane will need jobes arm and leg protectors and a special oint ment to protect his skin and ohip doesnt cover these costs mr stapley said another fund raising venture is currently being organized to will help the stapleys pay for shanes medical needs john ileaton of john heaton painting on mill st is in the pro cess of organizing a golf tourna- ment to benefit shane
