gibson rupert avenue saturdays promenade attracted a large crowd editors mail living beyond our means dear editor from the cradle to the grave this was the popular name given to a social security plan devised by sir william beveridge it came into operation in the united kingdom in july 1948 it greatly expanded and in tegrated various social insurance plans that had been adopted dur ing the preceding 40 years the cost was to be shared by the insured person employers and the state it was very wide in scope and every citizen received the benefit of the plan however as the demands in creased the cost got out of con trol and certain additional con tributions had to be paid by the insured person here in canada our social security system is very similar in scope and just as costly to be able to finance our social town sisters talented dancers sisters tamar and maral jamjckian bramble crescent stouff ville are extremely talented dancers they akc lessens in tap jazz and ballet at sandras dance studio scarborough they also play piano tamar in grade 6 and maral in grade 8 tamar is a student at st marks stouffville maral is enrolled at bros andre markham both participated recently in a variety show at parkview village jim thomas security plan money had to be borrowed at a high rate of in terest it is the high cost of our social insurance that has got us into the financial mess were in today to a large extent its responsible for our huge deficit we all benefit in one way or another under this plan and wed be loath to see any of the benefits decrease in value to any great extent now it looks as if we have to pay the bill for our extravagencies at the time of its inception it appeared financing it would be no great problem however in the last 25 years salaries wages prices and equipment costs have gone up rapidly now we find it very difficult to acquire the money to pay for these benefits the old adage of cut your cloth according to your means doesnt apply any more everyone in cluding all levels of government live on credit that encourages more spending but eventually our debts have to be paid our cumulative deficit is somewhere around 361 billion every 25 to 30 cents of every dollar goes to service that debt the international monetary fund suggests we have to cut our deficit by at least 9 billion dur ing the next year if we dont the value of the dollar will fall in terest rates will go up and well go into a recession one of the sections of our socie ty that will be hit hard by a reces sion will be the person whos been forced to by a house at grossly in flated prices if one wageearner is laid off who will pay the mor tgage when its already hard with two members working so what does our finance minister have to do in his next budget the financial experts predict that existing programs will be cut and others in the works will be abandoned there will also be an increase in taxation whatever he does it will be very unpopular with the voter screams of protest will emanate from coast to coast but if were to head off a reces sion it would be better for us to pay the bill rather than keep liv ing beyond our moans good luck mr wilson sincerely adam johnstone rr i stouffville in brief this is whats new in beach wear a trip to the beach this summer or maybe even a visit to the town pool could reveal the latest in swim wear as modelled by jennifer giasson 17 left and soni singh 22 saturdays fashion parade was the first of the season in stouffville jim thomas exemptions for parking by denise mcdonald stouffvlle do we want to make main street look nice or do we worry about parking such was the question posed by mayor fran sainsbury to members of whitchurch- stouffvilles planning advisory committee following a request for parking exemption at 153 main street west stonehouse house of travel according to a report submit ted by town planner michael saunders property owner richard crispi has indicated plans to begin renovations on the exterior of his building he also wishes to add an additional apartment upstairs by dividing the existing unit in two but to do so would require the addition of two parking spaces in order to comply with the zoning bylaw mr crispis present facility is already three- spaces short of the required total in order to proceed with his plans mr crispi has asked pac members to consider withdraw ing the parking levy and allow the cashinlieu of parking facilities to be waived i intend to start exterior renovations on the building in april or may to do my part in the rejuvenation of our downtown core that i support wholehearted ly he said its my hope the apartment can cater to seniors with the medical and shopping facilities in this area its an ideal location mr crispi also pointed out should the apartments be leased to seniors parking facilities may not be required the only good thing i can see about this is that you will be pro viding affordable housing above commercial units said coun cillor wayne emmerson but now everyone else is going to be asking for spots while the municipal parking lot behind the building was sug gested as an alternative mr saunders pointed out it already operates at full capacity during the week and at 25 percent through the evening the former mansion house hotel located on the east side of edward street presently being redeveloped also has a signifi cant parking deficiency the problem is the more parking we use around the area the more we force store owners to park on residential streets com pounding the issue said coun cillor jim sanders i think were really being shortsighted if we give up these spaces mayor sainsbury disagreed mr crispi did take into ac count the study done by euri bursens hes also located a pic ture of what the building looked like before and is trying to keep it in that manner besides i think there are some merchants in that block who have become too possessive about those parking spots i think there is going to have to be some giveandtake if were going to get main street off the ground contrary to mr saunders recommendation that members not grant the parking exemption they elected to postpone their decision for two weeks until councillor emmerson has an op portunity to talk with the people in the block concerned my intent was to provide muchneeded housing wedont have and to fix the building up if this comes down to a matter of dollars and cents id have to say my earlier motions have soured somewhat but ive heard the concerns and i understand con cluded mr crispi neighborly notes by jim thomas impressive reports indicate the world day of prayer ser vice in the stouffville mis sionary church was one of the most impressive held here in years thanks goes to guest speaker
