best available copy s late ron mcleod exceptional photographer by kate gilderdale stouffville the family and many friends of ron mcleod were saddened bv the news of his recent death at home 262 main street east stouffville mr mcleod was born march 25 1926 in new toronto and grew up inthe area attending parkdale collegiate institute a distinguished photographer he first became interested in the subject as a child and by age 13 was working after school for a local butcher after school saving up his earnings to purchase a camera arid darkroom equipment following graduation he joined the rcaf as an airgunner sta tioned in quebec when the war was over he travelled to scotland where his parents were born and apprenticed as a professional photographer with valentine and sons in dundee he remained there two years he then joined the respected edinburgh evening news as a staff photographer covering local national and international events his career brought him in contact with many famous people including prominent politicians and members of the royal family among his favorites were john diefenbaker and the queen mother mr mcleod returned to canada in 1948 and worked for three years covering sporting events with the turofsky brothers his assignments included hockey games at maple leaf gardens and rac ing at woodbine in 1951 he joined gilbert milne and co who specialized in public relations and concentrated on photographing canadians at work lie travelled extensively covering everything from pipeline con struction in central canada to surgeons performing hospital opera tions he was a member of the canadian association of professional photographers and received many photographic awards his photographs appeared in international publications including time and national geographic magazine he was one of 10 photographers selected to display their works in the ontario pavilion at expo 67 in the mid60s mr mcleod went into partnership wiith henry vee uilder the company name of mcleod and vee operating from a studio in downtown toronto in the mid70s he set up a darkroom at home since the majority of his assignments were outdoors and didnt require a studio he first
