stouffville presents jomo hendrickson with his third place award at the con clusion of an area intermediate spelling bee hosted by orchard park last week jomo 12 is a student in grade 8 jim thomas parents can be teachers dear editor on friday remem brance day i was helping out in a local kindergarten class at the earlymorning assembly at which all the school took part the students were told about lester b pearson and how he was held up as a hero of peace a role model that all might follow later i casually asked a boy of five what he wanted to be when he grew up he responded with a snarl i want to be in a war and have big guns and shoot people- in another corner of he kindergarten room a group of children were carefully building houses of blocks if wasnt too long before another child stormed over and bombed their- buildings much to the frustration of those whod put them up teachers cant possibly be expected to instil the value of peace in the minds of children if the seed isnt planted at home when are we as parents going to wake up and declare our homes and televisions war free zones it is the parents responsibility to determine what young children watch on television what toys they play with its quite likely that the very same parents who are out buying toy guns and war gorillas for christmas gifts would be the first to cry injustice if their sons and daughters were killed in a war or through some other violent atrocity we dont have to be public speakers we dont have to be rich or wave signs on parliament hill to do our part to encourage peace peace begins at home begins with the values that shape our childrens minds the very minds that will lead our country should there be a future sincerely linda menamara rr 4 stouffville graduates of sdss former
