described it as a wonderful reunion which has made our family grow in size and love jim was six when mary and robert baggs and their three children welcomed him into their close knit family he had been taken into the first of two foster homes at the age of four when authorities decided his mother joan couldnt care for him adequately joan couldnt read or write and suffered from a speech handicap but was a loving mother with her son the centre of her world when he was taking into care joan unaware of what she was doing signed a release form allowing the childrens aid society to put him up for adoption she fought desperately to keep him but her fight was in vain jim himself was unaware of what was happening i didnt know i was going to be adopted he said jim had felt secure in his se cond foster home and although he was by nature a happy child it took him a long time to adjust to his new family said mary i had become his fourth mother and hed lost his trust in people he longed for his birth mother and constantly asked mary to call and find out how she was as he grew to know and love his family jim began to realize he was a permanent part of their lives but he never forgot his mother stressed mary shed always known it wouldnt be easy to adopt a child of jims age but the family wanted to help someone who would be dif ficult to place we felt we had so much and we wanted to share what we had said mary stating it was a decision she would never regret hes special its really hard to explain you love him just as much but in a different way his pasttimes were typical of many children he skated on the pond during the winter and swam in the summer he also played on stouffvilles all star hockey teams he had planned to be a lawyer from an early age and in september he entered queens university to work towards his goal it was during this last summer jim began to seriously consider searching for his birth mother i just felt i wanted to do it he explained i always knew that id look for her one day i knew this was the right time finding natural parents can often be fraught with problems and frustrations jim was ex tremely fortunate lieutenant embree of the salvation army corps in markham took it on himself to do all he could to help after countless hours of phoning and travelling lieutenant em bree acheived the miracle jim had been waiting for he found joan throughout the search jims family supported him all the way they had discussed the ef fects of a reunion on jim joan and the whole family one they found joan mary said they knew it would be for keeps we couldnt just walk out of her life again in july the first meeting bet ween jim his family and joan was arranged they all met for lunch and it was a very emotional occasion one cannot express the emo tions involved when two people who have never ceased to love one another fall into each others arms mary said society had denied joan her schooling and most tragically of all her child mary watched her adopted son and his mother deep in conversation and felt a grow ing warmth and love for jims mother jims sister brenda remembers them all laughing and crying in the parking lot wondering what people would think if they saw us like this during lunch joan just sat there smiling and looking at jim said mary shes so proud of him after jim and joan were reunited he took her to meet his second foster family whom he still visits whenever he can when jim graduated from stouffville dist secondary school on friday night his fami ly including joan were there to watch with pride and love as he gave the
