past few weeks there has been much talk regarding martin scorseses film the last temptation of jesus those who have dared to criticize the film had been called everything from bigots to lunkheads by the mainstream press and pseudo- intellectual elite who seem to have come to the realization that christianbashing is now in vogue incredibly some including mp reg stackhouse in a recent globe mail article have even argued that the movie is an ac curate and orthodox portrayal of christ in spite of the fact that scorsese himself has stated that it is fiction yet whatever the motivation behind the production and pro motion of this film be they sincere or not there is no ques tion that the film is blasphemous the websters dictionary offers the following as a definition of blasphemy contempt or in dignity offered to god no orthodox christian can ob ject to the portrayal of jesus as being both god and man nor should we shy away from a film which clearly illustrates what that being a man entailed the bible does state that he was tempted in every way just as we are but it goes on to add yet without sin herein lies the blasphemy donate blood the canadian red cross work ing in close cooperation with the legion ladies auxiliary arc holding a blood donor clinic fri day oct 14 from 2 to 830 pm the location is the legion hall ninth line north babysitting will be provided in one scene christ is por trayed as a peeping tom an act which even in our sexually revolutionized 1980s is still regarded not only as a sin but a criminal offence in another the scene which shows the last temptation christ is shown having sexual fantasies while scorsese stackhouse and others may not regard these as sinful christ himself stated that they were in his sermon on the mount christ offered the following you have heard that it was said you shall not commit adultery but i say to you that every one who looks on a woman to lust for her has committed adultery with her already in his heart matthew 52728 so adamant was christ about the seriousness of this issue that he said and if your right eye makes you stumble tear it out and throw it from you for it is better for you that one of the parts of your body perish than for your whole body to be thrown into hell matthew 529 the movie clearly shows christ violating this important principle which he himself commanded this makes him a hypocrite and relegates him to the same category as the rest of us who are guilty of not living by the stan dards we know to be right cer tainly that is casting contempt and indignity on god and is therefore by definition blasphemy yet scriptural interpretation aside the movie raises other issues do people have the right to rewrite history on the basis of their own imaginations is it pro per to portray a real person in a fashion which is not true these questions would be rhetorical if we applied them to the heroes of today indeed susan blais graniers expulsion from the ranks of the progressive conservative party shows how strongly our own leaders feel about being por trayed in an inaccurate im properly documented fashion while some no doubt believe her claims no one would support her or defend her right to free speech if she like scorsese ad mitted that her allegations were the result of a sincere imagina tion there would be no end to the ensuing libellous gossip and scan dalous anecdotes if that kind of artistic expression were tolerated can you imagine the media promoting a movie featuring an ed broadbent who was really a kgb agent in disguise or a brian mulroney as a homosex ual how about a vickie keith buying a new ferrari with the money she raised on her marathon swims or a wife- beating henry morgentaler year ning to confess his sins to emmitt cardinal carter come on why not after all would they not on ly be movies mere earnest creativity of course not there isnt a theatre journalist or anyone who would dare support such pro ductions yet why is the same standard not applied in the por trayal of the one who is loved and worshipped by millions the god who loved us so much that he died for us the savior who sacrificed himself so freely that we might have life the lord of lords and king of kings at whose feet we all shall all someday bow the question demands an answer but perhaps the most self- evident indictment against scorseses film is not to be found in ethical debates on morality nor the legal and social implications of slander rather it is in the simple fact that the christ who held little ones in his arms who is worshipped and adored by millions in sunday schools the world over and who commanded his disciples not to hinder the children from coming to him would be portrayed in a movie to which those under eighteen are restricted from viewing sincerely mel middlcton gormlcy lawnie wallace opens concert ballantrae lawnie wallace high point drive ballantrae will open for the oak ridge boys at copps
