humanitas cen tre for personal growth and development which opened a year ago in aurora one of the organizers of the event is kathy doerner of ballan- trae who accepted the position at the centre after attending a number of workshops and an assertiveness training course led by ms berger i originally met janice through the york womens break where she was the keynote speaker recalls kathy she ran workshops on asser tiveness and communication skills i liked what i heard at the same york region womens day kathy signed up for a monthly newsletter the networker which features ar ticles and upcoming events of special interest to women in the area through the newsletter she learned of an assertiveness train ing course which ms berger was offering at the humanitas cen tre and decided to sign up for it for kathy it came at the perf- cect time a series of deaths in the family and her position as a homemaker with two children allison 12 and dan 9 forced her to examine her ability to take charge of her own life i felt extremely helpless and uncomfortable she remembers i wondered how i would be able to survive alone with the kids i wanted to feel bet ter able to manage my life and the kids and just to feel stronger the course gave kathy a com pletely new view of herself and her relationships it was like learning to speak a new language she states we discovered how so many of the beliefs we had as women made it difficult for us to even look at our real feelings the course she explains show ed her how to be aware of her own feelings and how to express them effectively without anger she also realized it was im possible for her to do everything alone the next stage was realizing that it was okay to delegate she observes it has been a learning experience for the whole family although family members have had to adjust she says it has been good for her relation ship with her husband bob and the two children i have begun to be very aware of the pressure on both men and women to conform to sterotypes she says discussions with ms berger on future plans and expansion of the centre led kathy to offer to help out at the humanitas centre the result was a new position full of challenges which in volves kathy in program co ordination public relations and program expansion she started working at the cen tre in july and one of her major projects was to organize the breakfast meeting which she is excited about i think stouffvilles ready for something like this she com ments adding that she hopes they will be able to organize four such meetings per year in york region its important for all of us women to realize our potential whether we are at home or in the work force she notes she believes ms berger can help a lot of other women to rethink their lives janice is a very exciting per son she says its fascinating to see how she works an audience and how they respond the meeting will address womens needs and wants in the 1980s and assist them in people out to the parade if it was on sunday as long as it wasnt on the same day as the toronto parade moira kerr looking at all the churches in stouffville i think a lot of peo ple would like to keep sunday for worshipping so i think it should be left where it is winnie tsapoitis it would be a good idea to move it to sunday its a relax ing thing to do so people might watch the parade instead of working sunday should be a day of relaxation gary gornlk i dont think it should be changed i still think its a pretty religious community the chur ches like to enter their floats so if you had it on sunday the turnout of churches and church i people might not be good
