baseball glory the 1958 all ontario hardball champion stouffville cardinals got together last saturday for a reunion after 30 years and when they lined up for their team picture they were all there looking like they could march out onto the field in port dover and win it all over again the anniversary celebration was held on murray stewarts property at hwy 47 and bloom- ington road stewart who had cocoached the cards along with stouffville resident harold ike hodgson turned his garage into a memorabilia centre for the event the bulletin board on the wall contained old press clippings of the teams cinderella victory trek there were crests team jackets a team uniform and stewart even dug up the caxdsw old canvas equipment bags con taining outdated gloves balls bats and shin guards bob works at mccowan mobile mix in agincourt murray holden who had been the junkthrowing lefthander on the cardinals now lives in peter borough with his wife and three children an employee with iga holden plays baseball and hockey i play slowpitch he said the pitching is about the same speed as i used to throw with the cardinals he joked in reference to his sneaky slow curve i bought a new pair of skates a few years ago he added so i guess im going to have to keep playing hockey until i wear them out lawrence wideman 48 came from his home in belleville for the reunion a bank manager there wideman has two children and a collection of fond memories of his teammates they were a great bunch of guys i have a lot of memories but you couldnt put some of them in the paperhe laughed eric barber the team kidder lives in uxbridge and works for the town of markham they paid me ro play for the cardinals right gord he said to teammate gord eckardt who played a major role in organizing the reunion there were times we paid to keep you away eckardt shot back aside from the fun and games of the event barber paid tribute to coach stewrt all the credit should have gone to him he said in challeng ing stewarts claim that anyone could have coached the cards john lit tle 49 drove from peterborough to attend a parttime farmer and tractor trailer driver he has two daughters he still plays a little ball having competed in a three- pitch tourney in the summer bob stover also lives in stouff ville and works as a human rela tions specialist with the york region board of education he has a wife and three children eckardt is president of assinck bros on hwy 48 and lives just outside of stouffville the former first baseman and catcher was thrilled with the reunions success its great just great a 100 per cent turnout he said i hadnt seen lawrence wideman and murray holden for 25 and the players wives were also caught up in the excitement including pat barber who still recalls the championship year vividly it wasa great exciting time she remembered i dont think that kind of could happen now with theitown so involved jim thomas of the tribune sup ported the cardinals so well and she creditedthe players for their 30 years of loyalty to the cards they all went off and got mar ried shortly after they won the championship she said ahd they all cared so much about each other photos 6 thomas
