a quick start in their attempt to repeat as york region high school volleyball champs three game sweep while the team is actually call ed the stouffville district secon dary school senior spartans coach jim fletcher has succeed ed in moulding the team to fit his style and he was more than hap py with his teams three game sweep of anderson secondary school in whitby in the stouffville teams season opener last tuesday the victory coupled with a gritty performance that saw the spartans take second place in this weekends tournament in unionville has the coach op timistic when it comes to their chances of taking it all this autumn cakewalk the victory at whitby was somewhat of a cakewalk as the powerful spartans were just too much for the home team to han- volleyball die the strong play of stouff- villes wally barber john hall steve head and carsten henza led to the 157 158 154 whitewash the spartans who went undefeated in 1987 lost out to archrival unionville saturday but not before they gave them a good scare having beaten aurora 158 and 155 to reach the tournament finals the spartans dropped the opener of the championship round 1513 but they routed unionville 155 in game two and came back from a 137 deficit to tie the deciding contest at 13 a piece before losing the serve and giving up the final two points to lose 1513 unionvilles strong unionville was stronger than 3 showed great unity and teamwork added fletcher the team ended up with an 114 wonlost record for the tournament which was run on a roundrobin format fletchers perserverance has resulted in his team being admit- ted into this weekends prestigious 13th annual york university high school classic its an invitational tourna ment says fletcher i sent them our press clippings from last year to convince them to let us in ah the marbles and while he is not counting on taking all the marbles against the stiff competition his spartans will be facing he feels the tourna ment will give his troops much- needed exposure to top quality teams its the best way to irrj- prove playing against greajt teams he claims cowan one of the spartans top power hitters was pleased with his teams showing in the tourna ment which pitted them against five other outfits from the york region circuit in which the sdss squad plays it was a good chance to feel out the other teams and see where we stood he said he then expressed his and his team mates satisfaction with coach fletchers dedication to the team fletch got us into the york tournament coming up this weekend he gives it all hes got hes been with us since we played for him as midgets in grade 9 junior girls come up on short end i the sdss junior girls basket ball team started their season by going up against two more ex perienced teams last week and even though they came up on the short end in both games they gained the respect of their coaches the stouffville cagers lost 2018 to sutton on monday and were handled 2718 by aurora thurs day both games were well played said bill mcknight who along with doug walker make up the teams coaching tandem stouffville got strong perfor mances from sue baston and kristie saunders on offence while kelly sheridan and julie coleman stood out defensively this will be a rebuilding year says mcknight adding that only karen carr and kristie saunders have returned from last years team well be pleas ed with
