stouffville golf tournament at meadowbrook golf challenging links on warden ave coif can be humbling course recordholder david few things are more humbl ing in this life than playing golf especially in a tournament especially with your boss i have never been one to brag about my game of sticks and monday afternoon at the fourth annual markham- stouffville hospital tourna ment i reaffirmed the reasons behind my reluctance i had a horrible game in short however the full house at the newlyrenovated meadowbrook golf and country club couldnt have asked for a better golf day it was a beautiful day was the mostheard comment of the day in the spacious clubhouse afterward how did you golf andrew 1 was asked it was a beautiful day i would answer meadowbrook is probably the toughest course ive ever played of course ive only played three different courses in my life still i saw enough water sand grass trees and farmers fields in one day of golf to last me a lifetime i experienced earth air fire and water on one trip around the links my playing partners ron good of remax bruce gribbon of guaranty trust and economist and sun publisher bruce annan were all sym pathetic to my plight and even tried to encourage my game with some lighthearted moments of their own but the day wasnt all for naught i was allowed to drive a golf cart for the first time ever my playing partners didnt know it at the time of course i got a sunburn but i needed the color anyway the course was great and the greens were slick a fabulfjis buffet was served after the round and for the first time ever i was at a table that was called to hit the tables first i even had first crack at the dessert table it would have been a com pletely successful day of golf except for the golf minute with mair andrew mail- under the pressure of wat chful eyes and the thrill of entering into my second tourna ment were too much for me i relented to the strain and drag ged in with a 113 for 18 holes then i heard the winner dave pashko had hit a 68 ha i said i beat him by 10 strokes i wonder what he shot on the back nine much to my embarrassment when they called out the name of the tournament winner pashko strolled up and col lected his prize for a score for 18 that would have beaten mine after 10 holes i settled for a heartshaped wicker basket as a prize when i presented it to her my wife assumed i had scored near the bottom of the heap immediately i thought you said you were going to win the trip for two on canadian airlines or at least one of the framed prints she scolded excuses about not enough birdies came next the only birdie youve ever hit sat in a tree she remarked yet i knew that while my golf game hasnt improved the situation for the markham- stouffville hospital fund has i was amazed to discover that the hospital is completely paid for before completion most hospitals run a deficit for many years after they open this tournament raised 15000 for the cause again this year i saw generosity in ac tion i sold some tickets for a raffle with donations going to the fund in just moments i was holding more than 120 from eager donors apparently at this tourna ment generosity not golf scores is par for the course ashko stuns tourney with 68 when youve based your future on a sport you best have the talent to back up your desire for dave pashko that has all been taken care of the 19yearold markham resi dent is planning to make a career of the game of golf and he has the talent to go with it the pride of the meadowbrook golf and country club pashko has taken his home club by storm since he first picked up a ptxkojohn manis i love this game exclaims markham economist and sun and stouffville tribune publisher bruce annan after sinking a lengthy putt a sold out tournament of 144 golfers found enjoyment on the course regardless of their scores club seven years ago he has pro gressed into the clubs finest player and one of the best in the country as well this year he shattered the course record from the in termediate or white tees with a sizzling 64 he already holds the record for the course from the champion ship tees at 68 meadowbrook is one of- the longest courses around nearly 7000 yards but pahskos boom ing drives seem to have tamed it one of the largest sand traps in canada on the 14th hole doesnt even phase the youthful pashko this season has been one of the most successful for the markham resident he won the meadowbrook club championship in fine style earlier this month and blew out the com- petition at the markham- stouffville hospital fund tourney this week i had a good front nine he says modestly of his 32 on mon day afternoon he slipped somewhat on the back nine of the tourney logging a 68 for the day ive played better he smiles this year pashko was second in the canadian junior cham pionships and hopes to attend wright state university in ohio in the fall of 1989 he hopes to qualify as a pro upon graduation meadowbrook president keith bray has nothing but praise for his star player this is one of the best young golfers in the coun try bray beamed monday after pashko topped him by nine strokes the weather also contributed to the pashko win it was just a beautiful day out there and i was playing with some good competitors pashko says playing on his home course is not often an advantage it can be played as a tough course if we were playing off the blue tees its really a tough course your drives have to be right on despite his age the young golfer has seen his fair share of tournaments he has competed in many canadian and american events and he usually wins most of them competing against the top amateurs in the us pashko placed fourth earlier this summer the tournament monday spon sored by the economist and sun- tribune and canadian tire was just great according to the winner this is my first year but it was a great tournament pahsko received- a robert bateman print and a trophy designed by inuit artist tayara papigatok from cape dorset comic relief once again this year glenn crosby one of the tournament organizers provided the commentary at tho awards banquet following the tournament telling tall tales of the day on the links
