wednesday by the greenbank gamblers in a classic contest at stouffville park the game was a matchup of two of the finest pitchers in the oshawa and district league greenbanks overpowering righthander wayne wells hung on to best john annis the crafty veteran of the betz staff wells was brilliant allowing only one hit he struck out 10 walked five increased his record to 40 and helped his team con tinue their great season unbeaten in eight games annis was rocked for both greenbank runs early in the game as the first two gamblers hit him hard george redshaw belted a tworun dinger to cash leadoff baiter terry till who had doubled but from then on annis was nearly flawless scattering three harmless singles and striking out eight including five of the last six he faced he didnt walk a man annis had the greenbank batters off guard all night long with his assortment of speeds location and a nasty curve ball the betz squad while unable to make any real contact with wells offerings was almost able to transform walks and errors in to a win they loaded the bases in the se cond inning on a walk to steve brooks an error allowing second baseman mark fockler to get on base and another walk to gary grant but wells bore down and struck out george to put out the fire betz finally did break through in the fifth when once again wells lack of control almost did him in grant and burkholder were both issued free passes and catcher doug mcmillan finally solved wells with a base hit to left which brought in grant but again wells came up with the big strikeout getting randy grant to strand the tying run on third annis then went on to strike out the side in the seventh setting the stage for a possible com eback the hometown fans were on the edge of their seats gary grant reached first on an error and then stole second with none out betz manager elected to have jim chilvers pinch hit for burkholder after running the count to one ball and two strikes chilvers rip ped a smash to the left side that had rbi written all over it but greenbank shortstop rod real managed to get a glove on it and doubled off grant at se cond base ending the threat and securing the 2j victory if the shortstop
