b2 tribune june 8 1988 oiler acton sets sights on future by bruce stanley for edmonton oiler keith acton the workplace may change and his career cir cumstances often leave him feeling like a leaf in the wind but when he unties his skates for the last time whether for the season or for his career all roads point home and for the hardworking young journeyman who now finds his name on- the stanley cup home has always been stouffville its a constant he says of the town in which he learned his hockey skills as a child for me stouffville has al ways been my home base some hockey players leave their home and live somewhere else for three years then they are traded and they sever all ties with their town and go live somewhere else this can hap pen three times or more keith claims its been easier to return to stouffville every spring because he is married to a hometown girl susan is from here too so this is where both our roots are he explains we think of stouffville as our final destina tion and his sense of belonging coupled with a set of smalltown values help him survive the constant uncertainties of the final years of his career and the eventual readjustment once his playing days are over he has a stability not always found in a young man who has been caught up in the glitter of professional sport he knows its not forever in hockey youre old at 30 his age he admits they draft kids at 18 now he candidly if jokingly admits the younger players on a team call veterans like him fossil but keith feels hes far from through as a professional hock ey player he still has another year on his contract with the stanley cup champion oilers and while hes not sure of his status with the club hes looking for ward to a few more seasons in the national hockey league when he does finally call it a day in the nhl he hopes he might get a chance to play hockey in switzerland he and susan are planning a combina tion holiday and scouting trip there in august in the meantime he is still enjoying the aftermath of the thrill of being on a stanley cup team however he claims keith acton its hard to explain but it hasnt really set in yet any championship you win you get the same feeling in a way he explains when we won the bantam championship in stouffville it was like the stanley cup for us but this is better because of the pride in volved ive got my name on the stanley cup and there many players who sweated for 20 years and never accom plished it hockey is a team game he insists a lot of guys will score 50 goals or so with a los ing team and they feel theyve done it all but on the oilers weve got guys who could be playing a lot morel and scoring a lot more goals with other teams but they wouldnt be part of a winning organization like the oilers keith says he was more than happy to leave minnesota and a situation that was becoming difficult to live with that situation was more dif ficult because keith had to wait a week before he knew where he was going next when he was told he was being shipped off to edmonton he saw it as a glorious opportunity to be on a stanley cup team you cant replace win ning he says when youre winning as a group of guys thats what its all about each guy is just happy to be a part of it he was quick to draw para llels with the montreal cana- diens for whom he had played in the first half of his career its nice to go to work where you really appreciate and re spect the people you are work ing for and with he main tains as for the direction his life will take once he has played his last game he is still uncertain but he hasnt ruled out staying with the game in another capacity its what i know best he says it would probably be the most favorable thing for me to do but the security is not very good plus you get tired of travelling he admits it will be a difficult adjustment when his playing days are through but for now he plans to re lax he is staging a golf tourna ment in july for the make a wish foundation and will work for williamson motors in uxbridge again this summer and all the while he will work on staying in shape something that becomes more important as he gets older you just cant let up he says in the old days players would come to training camp to get in shape now the first thing they do is give you a fit ness test they expect you to be in shape in the meantime hell have his batteries charged simply by knowing that for a few months the treadmill has ground to a halt and he is home and hes bound to daydream a few times about his skate around northlands coliseum with the stanley cup held
