be taking the shorter route to be with nathan and so she can bring along her 3yearold son paul b ive done longer routes she says the main problems are j things like curbs which i need help to get over mrs soini notes that keeping up with the walkers in a wheelchair wont be a problem unless the route is hilly 1 i go a lot faster down hills the ballantrae resident says laughing and i go much slower uphill but on level terrain my speed is about the same as people walking mrs soini has not let her dis- abilitjlibv hermovrr sretfsves nathan toschool evefytdavinher handcontrolled car and runs a business of her own in fact she got into business through her involvement in the canadian paraplegic associa tion as an expert witness lawyers hire her to conduct stu dies investigating the cost of fu ture care for victims who need re habilitation both prosecution and defence lawyers seek her assistance its an occupation that keeps her on the move i did about 70 cases last year she notes and i do a lot of travelling she has many cases in toronto but also in cities across the province such as otta wa and thunder bay but she does her best to keep her tuesdays and thursdays free to be with paul during the day when it comes to housework mrs soini and husband norm try to share duties equally and she has come up with some innovative techniques for daytoday activi ties ill use tongs for turning on the washer or the burners on the stove she says its just one of those everyday things that you can put to more than one use 3 its mostly things i cant reach that someone else has to do like dusting on a high shelf or cleaning the stairs mrs soini believes that people are more aware of the disabled today than 21 years ago when i was in university i would get to some buildings and id have to corner four guys to lift me up the stairs she thinks that most people are willing to help out they just dont know how you cant be afraid to ask for help if i had been shy in universi ty i wouldnt have gotten any where mrs soini says that if she does run into any trouble along the wal kathon route children will be more than willing to help out she remembers a time she was a church leader working with sun day school students they were fighting over who could push me she explains eventually i had to say oh i really need the exercise so it would be better if i push myself so kids really like to be helpful the walkathon begins at 1 pm starting and finishing in stouffvil le memorial park the event will be followed by a balloon release vanda makeyourown sundae vpavty f we offer special summer
