82 tkibune afk1l 6 19s8 beat the champ bill petri top bowler by blaine kaneko bill petri is on the money and jn the money after taking the trophy during the march 27 fourth annual beat the champ tourna ment at the stouffville bowling centre not only did bullseye bill grab the hardware he also took home the 285 dollar first place prize af ter outlasting phil redshaw 4 to 14 it was the first time i stayed in so far said bill i usually al ways get beat out in the first or second round j bill survived the keglers purge starting four weeks beforehand the tournament which began yith 64 entries was whittled down to 24 then 12 then to the final six it wasnt the first time bill ex perienced victory two month ago bill won the treasurers division of the hiram walker special old executive tournament and has qualified for the canadian championships in ottawa april 23 the beat the champ competi tion was based on surpassing your own average rather than going headtohead with a challenger the process is fairly simple subtract the score of the game bowled against your usual aver age the total is your games score its a format most bowlers agree is fair because it allows bowlers with lower averages an opportunity to win i think its fair laughed bill it gives bowlers of lower aver age something to shoot for it seems every time i go up to a tournament 1 win something ive never had a year like this so whats the secret skill sta mina technique i have a feeling its not just good bowling its just other peo ples bad bowling bill joked i changed my pattern a few months ago its the way i hold the ball you talk to other people and learn different patterns and sometimes good bowlers have off days like in the finals with phil redshaw it was also one of the first times i didnt feel nervous bowl ing in a tournament he con cluded 8d88 squad in region finals after only three weeks of practice and no actual competition the stouffville dist secon dary school badminton team has qualified for the york region championship tournament the team travelled to thornlea secondary school last week to participate in the york southeast badminton championships the relatively inexperienced squad consisting of karam atner ted storehouse ashley chan scott evans hob blundon rob cronin lisa zeck mary sled llse haylow maureen slatter paul sinclair leslie snooks chris burkholder and pain powell took on much more experi enced competition from such schools as mar- kham unionvillc and st roberts despite their inexperience three pairs qual ified for the york region tournament held at laagstaff secondary school april 19 and 21 in the senior pairs division ashley chan one of the few experienced players on the squad hav ing taken to the courts in his native hong kong teamed up with newcomer scott evans to adv ance to the finals losing to a team from st roberts 815 1015 but qualifying for the york tourney t on the junior side two pairs performed ex- traordinariiy well placing second in their re- spectivc divisions according to junior coach laurie cook the tandem of duane zielonko and jon barnes play ed superbly especially in the finals against an aggressive team from unionville h to advance to the boys pairs championship duane and jon defeated teammates tony peri suad and mike grove in the semifinals j y another surprising result was the perform- i ance of kevin harmar and lianne nichols the duo fought to the finals only to lose but ha vex qualified for the region championships in the mixed pairs category results were encouraging to senior teams coach jim rehill taking into consideration the lack of practice time due to the unavailability of a proper badminton facility coach rehill said his club played their fcearts out- he went on to say it was a learning experience for a lot of the players and he hopes next year to schedule a few duomeets to give the badminton participants the recognition they deserve by playing in front of a home crowd 10
