often find themselves travelling together competing in their own events he sees it as a great way to spend the time together that so many other fathers and daughters lack ive told her i cant give her money but ill give her my time and my love he smiles we probably spend twenty or more hours a week together tracys younger sister dina is also involved being possessed of considerable skills on the trampo line but has not taken to her sport in the same fashion as tracy last year saw all three of the athletic emerys made the provin cial finals in their areas of exper tise tracy likes to apply herself yearround to her pursuit of gym nastic excellence last summer found her working at seneca col lege coaching gymnastics a trip to the 1984 olympics in los angeles proved an eye opener for both father and daughter watching the best gymnasts in the world tracy claimed she was spellbound it was amazing theres just no words to describe it most peo ple dont understand the pain effort and agony that go into learning those procedures while bryan is always there for tracy encouraging her and even competing with her on a fun level he realizes there is a limit to his involvement i cant be her coach he con cedes the only thing i can do is guide her hopefully she can make some use of the guidance i give her tracy is hopeful she will be able to take her gymnastic skills over seas next year as part of an ex change program involving athletes from thejersey islands who are coming here this sum mer if all goes according to plan a team from tracys markham gymnastic club will make the re turn trip competing in the jersey islands france and england against their best gymnasts both tracy and her father are aware of the overall potential for discipline in life made possible by a dedicated approach to a sport like gymnastics its something you keep and take with you says bryan em ery of the work habits and com mitment involved in becoming a top ranked gymnast like tracy citing his own experience he adds that the social contacts are long lasting as well the friends you make through this type of athletic involvement are friends you keep for years because of the common bond you had when you were competing he would like to believe that tracy is building a good founda tion for the rest of her life through her time spent perfecting her gymnastic skills it sets you up for life the highs the lows win ning and losing the dedication and the idea of the economy of time while tracys immediate goals entail placing in the top six in the provincial championships this year her future plans will hope fully include winning a scho larship to an american universi ty where she will be given the opportunity to further develop her gymnastic abilities beyond that she is counting on a career as a physical education teacher or an athletic coordi nator in the meantime its down to the markham gymnastic club several times a week for practice and trips to invitational meets more often than not accompanied by a father whose encouragement and caring guidance has given her the opportunity to experience some of the joys and triumphs he himself has experienced opening nearyou samurai
