didnt have enough time to do half the things we wanted to do these are a few of the positive comments expressed by bill marguerite susan and ken mur phy main street west stouffvil- le related to an unforgettable oneweek trip to the winter olym pics in calgary bill and marg had been plan ning a visit to the next canadian olympics ever since we missed montreal in 1976 according to bill although unable to obtain tick ets to the opening ceremonies they still packed a lot into their holiday taking in two hockey games as well as mens downhill skiing and skijumping events it was necessary to arrive at the ski competitions 2 vz hours early just for a lookin ex plained marg however there was lots of entertainment and the atmosphere was friendly so the time passed quickly the murphy family stood at the finish line and watched the skiers complete their last laps howev er all spectators were able to fol low each entry from the very be ginning over huge tv monitors at the site before each event forerun ners would ski down with all diffe rent flags and do a formation said marg susan was impressed with the spirit of the vast crowd it was like one big party with spectators on one side calling out slogans to spectators on the other she said marg susan and ken all voted downhill skiing as the most excit ing while bill picked skijumping as his favorite despite the steepness of the course athletes were never more than seven or eight feet off the ground bill noted the murphy family met several famous athletes including ken read steve podborski and brian stemmie susan posed with sever al of them while bill marg and ken snapped photographs everyone bill and marg talked stouffvilles bill and marguerite murphy accompanied by son ken and daughter susan appreciated the warmth of calgary and the friendliness of its people susan is shown here with downhill ski sensal tion ken read with were impressed at how well everything was organized although security was a major concern it didnt interfere with anyones enjoyment they said the only complaint they heard was from some of the hockey players they said there werent enough girls in the village the hockey players were the only participants who really didnt have much opportunity to watch other events bill observed when they werent playing they were practicing he said bill marg ken and susan met up with two west german play ers no 4 the team captain and no 19 i might be able to re member their names but i could never pronounce them said susan were extremely friendly the captain presented susan with a special olympic pin some thing shell always treasure souvenirs were widely available although most disappeared as quickly as they hit the stands particularly popular were headbands susan managed to obtain one with both the calgary logo and the olympic logo sewn on however they were dis appointed thy couldnt find more no sooner did they arrive then they were gone said bill pincollecting and trading were other popular pasttimes there was even a centre set up for peo ple looking for exchanges the murphy family stayed with relatives in the area we were lucky we didnt have to look for accommodation said bill but we probably would have fitted in more things related to the games if wed been staying at a hotel or motel every night after the medals were awarded there was a laser show followed by fireworks weve never seen anything quite so spectacular agreed marg the murphy family had great praise too for the many volun teers attending the games they were friendly helpful and very enthusiastic said bill the winter olympics may be over but for bill marguerite ken and susan murphy its a memory that will last a lifetime however if and when this ex travaganza returns to canada anywhere in canada guess wholl be the
