twh s late walter pipher tribune march 2 1988 a7 hundreds pay tribute to serving resident stouffville in recent years it was one of stouffvilles largest funerals as residents from all walks of life paid their respects to the memory of walter pipher saturday afternoon the oneill funeral home was filled to overflowing for the ser vice a tribute to a gentleman held in high regard by all whod come to know him mr pipher passed away feb 25 in scarborough centenary hos pital where hed been a patient close to a month he was 83 born at lemonville the son of mr and mrs john pipher walter received his formal education in that community he later farmed there also in uxbridge and at dicksons hill fortyfive years ago he moved to sunset boule vard stouffville he was a member in the con gregation of ringwood christian church mr pipher enjoyed the fel lowship of several organizations including the stouffville lions club the oddfellows lodge the silver jubilee club and the friendship club every fall he enjoyed the annual trek north with members of the wildcat hunt club missing this past year for a first time when health permitted he would meet with the boys for cof fee every morning at stouffvilles regal restaurant on main street most significant of all associa tions was that of the lions club membership there spanned almost 41 years walter joined the lions in may 1947 he served as secretary from 1950 to 1952 and president in 1959 he later went on to become zone chairman in 196061 and 196970 he was elected deputy district governor in 196162 a eulogy on behalf of lionism was spoken by member ivan har ris while fellow lions both local and from a distance stood silent ly close to the casket at the front of the chapel said ivan a lions club is a large family where each one should feel himself a part should feel the need to enjoy in complete liberty the desire to aid and serve it is a human chain joining together the young and the not-so- young to maturely consider the one and to prevent the other from aging too rapidly to serve faith fully one must first learn to forget oneself to help oneself by helping others helping others was walter piphers lifelong goal he realized this ambition many times over walter and rae gower were married 60 years ago dec 1 1987 hundreds attended an open house at the silver jubilee club to mark this diamond anniversary milestone mr pipher was extremely proud of his family daughter and soninlaw olive and murray daniels of minden son and daughterinlaw murray and isobel pipher of markham four grandchildren robert and cathy daniels marilyn and rick mil ler doug and jackie pipher rod pipher and six greatgrandsons philip and paul daniels chris and brad miller mathew and michael pipher the service was conducted by pastor daniel schut of ringwood christian church assisted by for mer pastor rev jim byrne jackie pipher sang one of wal ters favorite hymns abide with me spring interment will take place at stouffville hospital scarborough mr wideman son of john and mary wideman was born in pick ering township may 28 1899 he spent most of his first thirteen years in toronto attending school there he enjoyed playing baseball and selling newspapers he often recounted how on april 14 1911 his paper sales soared it was the day the titanic went down mr wideman remembered reading how the passengers sang nearer my god to thee as the ship sank out of sight it made a lasting im pression on his life after moving to the markham area les married sussanah ramer june 30 1920 they took up residence on a farm east of stouffville where they remained until moving to main street in 1960 from 1933 to 1945 les was the mailcarrieron rr 4 stouffville his services were greatly appreciated because of his friend liness and dependability no mat ter what the weather and road conditions he accepted these as a challenge delivering the mail to every home and farm each day leslie and susannah wideman were the parents of lloyd stouff ville grace mrs mervyn brethour stouffville edna mrs gordon brown stouffville jean mrs floyd schneider mooreficld carl stouffville grant uxbridge and stewart of ringwood he was a devoted grandfather to 20 grandchildren and 18 greatgrandchildren on birthdays and family holidays he always enjoyed participating in family activities following susannahs death in 1970 les spent the next four years living with family members then became a resident for 14 years at parkview he enjoyed involvement in all activities there as well as hobbies of reading and playing the piano while physically able he was al ways helpful to those less fortun- ate than himself during his life he was associ ated with the stouffville mission ary church where his funeral was held feb 24 at 2 pm with rev douglas gray in charge special music was provided by dick and shirley ohlman pallbearers were grandsons glenn wideman brent brethour robert brown john schneider neil wideman eldon wideman and the former lorell zadow of richmond hill her maid of honor was donna zadow of scarborough the grooms best man was steve bojahra of thornhill rev craig pitts conducted the ceremony the happy couple will reside in richmond hill jim thomas an ambitious project stouffville he didnt win however if the students had been judges hed certainly have received an honorable mention nineyearold ken sandiford placed a beautiful exhibit in the feb 25 science fair at summit- view school he called it rivers the entry weighing 120 pounds showed how glaciers melt at the tops of mountains and form rivers and lakes below it took three nights to com plete the working model the grade 4 pupil explained plus a night to do the paper work his father ken sandiford transported the exhibit to the school in the back of his pickup truck why did he do it because rivers are so impor tant to us ken explained it was his first science fair pro ject it attracted much interest and prompted many questions miwcsson scjool
