stapley stouffville back on the job after a brief vacation paul whitehouse looks at his desk piled high with paper and asks where do i start holding the position of en gineering coordinator for the town of whitchurchstouffville paul has no difficulty convincing people hes filling a major need hes held the portfolio almost eight months the 35yearold mississauga father of two is responsible for co ordinating the combined efforts of the municipal works depart ment the parks department and the maintenance staff at the rec centre he must oversee the mainte nance of all townowned facili ties he also coordinates all en gineering projects working in close cooperation with the firm of giffels and associates often hes called upon to re feree differing opinions of en gineers hired by developers and the town the positions not without con troversy paul admits i guess complaints are all a part of the job paul says he attempts to re solve problems the best he can and at the same time improve the towns image but hes the first to admit i sometimes make mis takes paul whitehouse is no stranger to whitchurchstouffville he was an employee on the staff of giffels for 11 years i was the liaison man he recalls i quickly disc overed how the town works as far as duties are concerned paul admits im often swamped im still trying to keep my head above water its a matter of organizing the various groups i think ive established a good rela tionship pauls no stranger to com plaints and problerps like the ongoing lament of revenue prop erties residents westfield estates in stouff villes cast end when i was with giffels there was always the matter of subdi vides not abiding by conditions laid down for them he declares then theres winter and the dif ficulties related to snow and ice removal for example the no 2 grader broke down and a replace ment had to be rented along with a snow plowsander a new ones been ordered but hasnt arrived yet occasionally paul says he re ceives thank you letters his goal he says is to improve overall service and maintain a feeling of pride in the works de partment the revenue property situa tion has posed his greatest chal lenge its resolving itself now he insists the residents may never be totally satisfied because of past developments but westfield is making an effort paul claims daily demands in putting out fires that constant ly flare up make it difficult to concentrate on the important business of planning and forecast ing he feels the two areas requir ing the most time are roads and developers paul sees the traffic study re lated to main street stouffville as a positive step the report will identify prob lems and make recommenda tions then well begin im plementing them he states pauls anxious to establish a garbage recycling program rec ognizing problems that lie ahead in terms of waste disposal paul claims hes now comfort able with other departments administered by the town press ures caused by growth are tremendous he says its diffi cult living up to expectations of those people whove been accus tomed to bigcity services he ex plains eventually paul hopes to be come a permanent resident of whitchurchstouffville for now however the long drive home help him unwind from an arduous day fighting fires neighborly notes by jim thomas remember bruce stapleys story on former markham mil lionaire centre star harry milroy tribune issue jan 6 has stirred a lot of memories jim clarke local man-about- town recalls harry wearing a toque not a helmet with a tassel hanging down over one v ear he remembers too how he used to sing or hum as he danced up the ice shifting from one skate to another ah yes those were the days better late v on wednesday afternoon the tribune received a call from carrier adam senours mother at island lake she said an uxbridge twp snow- plow had buried her sons bun dle of papers they were no where to be found doreen deacon of the tribunes office staff agreed to deliver replacements on thursday morning mrs senour called again it seems the snowploiv operator saw the papers stop ped his truck picked up the bundle and put it on the front seat he then made a personal delivery to the senour home the next day thoughtful eh it could only happen in the country calling it quits winter break according to reports filter ing out of uxbridge cal av ery the mayor of island lake will call it quits at the conclusion of his threeyear term too bad cal added a lot of color to an otherwise drab political scene although he told me of retirement plans on several occasions i never gave them much credence obviously he was serious but then again he can always change his mind a lot can happen in eleven months congratulations congratulations to mr and mrs garfield kellington of newmarket and town agreed cars could be lo cated there while reconstruc- tion of the gotrain parking- site was underway but it was only intended for one month now it seems the contractor has postponed the project un til spring hopeful of improved weather and soil conditions so it seems library patrons will have to put up with over i crowding for at least threlev more months church signs signs are important to
