p4 mme3tomuiiv4t school name debated the york region board of education is still considering the naming of a new school in unionville a board commit tee favored calling it coledale road public school to the boards credit the name is being held in abeyance because of a sugges tion to name the new school af ter longtime unionville edu cator alfred alf hill although the boards stated policy is to not name schools after people there have been exceptions et crowle and william berczy being notable ones in this area in this case naming the school after mr hill is a good idea his whole life was de voted to the local community both through his work as a teacher and principal and with the local lions club it would be a fine tribute in deed to name the new school alfred hill public school men of his calibre deserve to be properly recognized for their community involvement don bernard whatever gets you through the night nostalgic moment to remember george carlin once did a touching television skit where a man returns to the streetcorner of the old neighbourhood sits down and asks where the old gang has all gone the return to the scene of ones childhood glory days has an in evitable nostalgic wistfulness which would have us look longing ly on the carefree simplicity of our early years i got to experience one of those delightful nostalgia baths recent ly when an appointment found me within minutes of the old neigh bourhood and i just couldnt re sist the urge to check out the school where i learned to read write and do finger painting same old building it had hardly changed at all one storey nine rooms on top of the hill where south leaside meets north rose- clale in toronto standing out there all alone be hind home plate on the school baseball diamond i felt the from where i live strongest desire to squat down in the catchers position as i had done so many times way back then during those fiercely fought hardball games that pitted neigh bourhood against neighbourhood us against them and maybe it was the heat or perhaps weve all got a little of carlins nostalgic craving in us specially when yours was a pic ture perfect childhood whatever it was i suddenly found myself enshrouded by a rose colored mistiness through which i could see the old gang in their familiar old positions sport ing beat up ballgloves brushcuts and preadolescent cockiness yes there was grator my inseparable sidekick on the pitchers mound looking in for my signal another strikeout and we would be out of the inning heiffer at first base pound ing his glove rib at second chawing his bubble gum hands on his knees as he crouched in ex pectation of that grounder that so often found its way through his legs pit at shortstop sunglasses sitting on that freckled face chat ting it up to his pitcher un at third pepitone in left field points in right and oh this next one hurts a bit doug in centre field with his mickey mantle yankee baseball shirt number 7 on its back doug the one true athlete in the bunch the only one without a nickname the guy for whom great catches and homeruns were taken for granted the kid who would always come with me on the streetcar to see the old maple leafs play ball so we could watch the pros on sunday afternoons the same doug who would eventually lose the big one a bat tle with cancer that would snuff out his great athletic promise at the age of 16 for even an idyllic childhood doesnt come without its tragedies as i continued to scan the scene my eyes fell on the sidelines where the girls would always gather giggling and pretending to be totally oblivious to what was going on out in the field the paved playground off in left field was still intact offering the lure to the hitters who would try to smack the ball on to it so it would roll for ever guaranteeing a home run as the mist gradually cleared i was alone again i had thoroughly enjoyed this early sixties replay no wonder i like playing monday night mens league baseball so much i reflected all of us guys are still kids at heart i looked around again there was no one in sight a silly grin broke out on my face i shrugged my shoulders said hey why not and gave in to that urge to crouch down in my old catchers position behind home plate just one more time i was happy to have returned for while it may well be true that you can never go home it sure doesnt hurt to go back and
