a6 tribune july 1 1987 fourteenyearold michelle hofstee of thick- etwood boulevard stouffville was prominent on stage june 22 when summitview public school held its grade 8 graduation ceremony michelle received no less than 15 awards including the jim fletcher trophy for athletic leadership and the lions club trophy for proficiency in french denise mcdonald mrs catherine thomas family and church were top priorities during her full life mabkham a long and re warding life ended june 22 with the passing of mrs catherine cassie thomas in scarborough centenary hospital mrs thomas 95 had been in declining health for the past six months she was admitted to hos pital june 9 born catherine johnston sept 9 1891 daughter of lachlan and marion johnston she grew up in thorah township near beaverton after attending toronto nor mal school she began her teaching career at painswick and later campbellford before joining the staff at franklin school mar- kham where she remained from 1914 to 1921 it was while living on albert street in markham that she met and later married herbert w thomas dec 27 1922 they would have celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary this year fortythree years were spent on the family farm at lot 16 cone 9 markham on their retirement they moved to the village squire apartments markham where theyve resided for the past 22 years while on the farm mrs tho mas was actively involved in all areas of community life including the neighborhood sewing circle and farm forum she took pride in her flower and vegetable gar dens mrs thomas had great love for her church she was a member in the congregation of the markham methodist and later st andrews presbyterian her unwavering faith in god was maintained to the very end on july 27 1986 mrs thomas turned the first sod for the new sanctuary but was never able to attend a service there she was a pastpresident and a life member of the womens mis sionary society she was a long time member and worker with the ladies aid and an enthusiastic supporter of the womens service guild mrs thomas was an accom plished elecutionist she often re cited at area garden parties church and community functions her last selection was presented during a- presbyterian fund- raising dinner held at cedarbrae golf and country club last year but above all these things came her husband herb and family three sons and daughtersinlaw robert and edna and donald and doris of markham jim and jean of stouffville one daughter and soninlaw betty and norman tapscott of epsom and fifteen grandchildren teddy mary mark gord and martha john and ann susan mrs ron mcmullen barry paul cathy neil and marylynn bradley and grant mrs thomas was predeceased by one brother robt c johnston in 1975 many former neighbors close friends and family relatives vi sited the dixongarland funeral home wednesday to pay their respects with the service thurs day in st andrews presbyterian church rev allen embree the con gregations pastor and a close friend spoke in glowing terms of mrs thomass contributions to her church and her community rev john tapscott grandson of the deceased shared in the ser vice this was one of mrs tho sjn4p9 fflsjfft ob i 1 83113 catherine thomas harvey byer hydro employee for many years stouffville hawthorne avenue residents will miss seeing harvey byer and nita strolling along their street the two harvey and his dog were familiar to all whod come to know them mr byer passed away june 18 in uxbridge cottage hospital where hed been a patient five days he was 68 harvey byer was born in mar kham twp the son of joseph and elizabeth byer he was a long time employee of ontario hydro first as a stockman and later as a driver in the forestry division prior to retirement he worked parttime with satellite automo tive supply limited in markham it was almost 44 years ago july 17 1943 that harvey byer and ada curlew were married they moved from etobicoke to 116 hawthorne avenue in 1964 mr byer was an excellent carpenter he put this skill to good use at the stouffville missionary church many projects there are the products of his handiwork in addition he served as a church trustee was a member on the church board and served as the churchs representative to park view home he enjoyed a wide circle of friends rev douglas gray and rev jim clubine shared the funeral service held june 22 from the mis sionary church participants also included the rae family calvin and karen garnet and dale they sang the beautiful hymn until then pallbearers were bill cor ner carl wideman willard moyer la verne housser charles byer and bill byer interment was made at dicksons hill cemetery besides his wife mr byer is survived by two daughters mrs ruth robbins of kitchener evangeline byer don mills three grandchildren joy karen and dianne robbins two brothers levi of clifford ont and alvin of toronto and three sisters sussanah housser mar kham annie werner wroxeter and flora byer of port perry
