nights mens fastball game between betz pools stouffville and greenbank is one neither team is going to forget for a long time with a huge strawberry festiv al crowd at memorial park and a carnivallike atmosphere the two squads battled to an 88 tie in extrainnings the game was called after nine frames and nearly three hours as oshawa city and district league rules only allow two extrainnings this one started strangely with the greenbank gamblers jump ing out to a 50 lead in the top of first due to mainly to betz errors and if got weirder in the third inning stouffville exploded for eight runs to jump ahead behind the strong pitching of john annis and jim chilvers the betz boys looked certain to hang on and win but three greenbank runs in the the sixth forced extra- innings betz and greenbank were dead locked in more ways than one af ter the tie they sit atop the league with identical 821 re cords and it looks like the fight for first will between them the rest of the season betz manager bryan emery said the tie was an unsatisfying result but he was pleased that his team overcame the early five run deficit it was nice to see the team gut it out and come back like that he said however having five runs scored against in one inning was not encouraging a lot of those balls were hit hard though and they were tough plays to make emery ex plained tonight as part of stouffvilles tournament rules dictate that the undefeated team must be beaten twice in the final for the challenger to win greens first game victory set up the possibility of an upset and made for an emotional and enter taining second game which the royals won 137 to gain the cham pionship it was an intense match with town bragging rights on the line and both teams took it very seriously also the royals compete in the york major slopitch league and greens plays in the york- durham loop so there was the added pressure on the players of maintaining their respective leagues honor the royals took a 72 lead in the second inning and never looked back though greens did threaten for four runs in their last at bat despite the hard play once the final out was made both teams showed good sportsmanship and every one was soon back to being neighborly there were some 24 teams com peting in three divisions c d and dd at this years buttermakers tournament which featured beautiful weather and a huge fan turn out buttermakers slopitch tournament as the barn swallows a team of former laurentian university students invaded the town the di amonds the beer garden and anything else too slow to get out of their way this was the fifth year at the tourney for the swallows and their colorful uniforms glasses rubber noses and bizzarc antics have made them a crowd favorite their popularity in stouffville just keeps growing the swallows got the tournament off to a perfect start friday night with a lighthearted exhibition game against the buttermakers and friends which provided the large crowd with lots of laughs home team was determined by a race from second base to home between the buttermakers wayne nugent and the swallows brian fish swallow trevail fish just beat a sliding nugent to the plate the race also settled an old score between the nugc and fish as to who was fastest we feel nuge is a heck of a guy but he learned the hard way that when you take on a swallow youre gonna lose big explained bill jumper swallow stephens team spokesman jumper was designated team spokesman because he never stopped talking and was for the most part coherent the swallows had vowed to humiliate the buttermakers in this game and after three innings the buttcrmakcs left the field trailing 32 to be replaced by the nads a team of english gentleman lots of laughs stunts and a bit of ball followed and the color commen tary by jerry howarth made the game even more entertain ing everyone was too busy laughing to remember the score but it may have been a tic while the swallows arent quite the harlem globetrotters or the king and his court they could do quite well travelling the province and playing in ton ma mens if they wanted to but stouffvillc is the only town lucky enough to sec their unique talent this is the only tournament we play in jumper said we wait all year for this one it takes us that long to recover stouffvillc is fortunate that resident mike boadway is an original barn swallow and the team has chosen to flock to his town annuaily while here the swallows nest at the boadway house at last report it sidelines by alan shackleton sports editor tribune sports editor shackleton centre was trying to interview the barn swallows when they set upon him with rubber nose and glasses took his camera and refused to let him go unless he posed for this photo jumper swallow was still standing the swallows were hatched at laurentian university in 1979 and have been going strong ever since the team members all lived in the same residence at laurentian and formed the squad as a joke to show- up another team at the school called the barn owls we formed the swallows to bug the barn owls jumper said the owls won a tournament one time and it was all they ever talked about they walked around going hoot hoot hoof at each other so we started chanting barn swallows and it took off from there the owls have died but the swallows survived were still alive because weve built a strong infrastructure within the team to help bring up the young guys while the majority of the swallows now live and work around toron to some players travelled from as far away as sarnia sudbury and timmins for the tournament despite their comic approach the swallows are pretty good ball players when they have to be and they reached the finals in the dd divison of the tournament before losing 75 to a tough markham squad also the swallows were selling all manner of souveniers over the weekend including the groucho glasses and nose and they donated the profits from this some 220 to the markhamstouff ville hospital build ing fund whitchurchstouffville councillor wayne emmcrson called them a great bunch of guys who i cant say enough good things about and invited them back for next years tourney however not all was roscy for the swallows in stouffville the large styrofoam glasses and nose which rode on the front of the swallows convertible was stolen sometime friday night were offering a reward of 1 million or a night out with the swal lows whichever is cheaper jumper said the members of the barn swallows and their nicknames i was afraid to ask how they got them- arc peter
