church stouffville by jean litster did you think the dates were re versed not if youre looking at the lifetime of a marriage look ing back to assess the strengths and accomplishments and appre ciating the contributions to home and community lloyd pegg and alma jackson were married june 15 1922 he was 24 and she was 20 lloyd was born in north dako ta january 1898 however his father andrew pegg soon moved the family back into canada the lasalle area south of winnipeg it was a newlyopened settlement without a church or a school although andrews concern led to the establishment of a school he later came back to ontario where opportunities for education were better although moving upset lloyds progression in school in his late teens he enrolled in the college of agriculture at guelph where soon a whole new world was opened he found hockey and soccer great fun later when his brother will arrived at oac the college be came not only a challenge but a home moving from place to place was even more a part of the back ground of alma lloyds future wife as head miller for the ogil- vie co her father ed jackson had moved his family across canada from greenwood ont to medecine hat alberta sas katchewan and back east again to montreal where alma completed her formal education her music studies encouraged by her mother from an early age and her solo work in the churches of montreal led to the poise and reputation that wop her the lead in the gilbert and sullivan musical patience at the age of only 17 one of almas memories of mcgill university that later de lighted her daughters was of stephen leacock in his long fur coat striding across the campus through the snow lloyd and alma first met when at age 16 she visited relatives in greenwood four years later fol lowing his graduation from oac they were married june 15 1922 with his brother will as grooms man and her dear friend laurette campbell as bridesmaid creating a home and estab lishing a family and a farm kept lloyd and alma very busy in the next few years lloyd taught agricultural short courses to the farmers in many parts of ontario and served as a judge at school fairs encouraging interest in good agricultural techniques in the winter there was time for re creation he enjoyed the fel lowship of his brothers while on hunting trips into the bush far from home and her own family alma learned much about country life from her new family and also contributed much with her enthusiasm for celebrating birthdays and special occasions the church was important there alma gave liberally of her musical talents as well as exper tise in many capacities to the womens organizations a gift of herself that has confined more than 60 years she also taught piano occasionally initially travelling by horse and buggy and later in her own home lloyd also contributed his ta lents generously to the church as a leader in the sunday school the choir and treasurer for many years he also enjoyed the young peoples programs and plays he excelled at crokinole after 25 years of farming lloyd sold the property and started a second career as stockkeeper for oshawa public utilities in this setting almas musical talent was greatly appreciated her solos at st andrews gave plea sure to many while her friendly nature graced both choir and womens organizations within the church following lloyds retirement he and alma moved to cardiff ont again making a significant contribution to the community through their church it was here that alma took on her first profes sional job as music teacher in the school throughout their 65 years of marriage the main themes have continued service to the church concern for other mem bers of the family activity in education including many years on the school board and interest in public affairs and government as we look back with lloyd and alma towards 1922 we celebrate two lives welllived together con gratulations at the pegg family reunion june 14 on the site of the andrew pegg family farm the claremont conservation area lloyd and almas 65th wedding anniversary was celebrated on this occasion 135 relatives embracing four generations ranging in age from three months to 89 years gathered to renew ac quaintances and honor this highly respected couple a cake beautifully decorated with the names of all the grand children and greatgrandchildren was the subject of much interest and favorable comment lloyd and alma have four daughters doreen mcvey toronto laurette brookham havelock jean litster amher- stburg audrey michell milton eleven grandchildren and four teen
