week house league tournament doesnt start for three weeks but coaches and officials are already geared up for it thanks to a pep talk from scott bowman bowman the legendary coach of nhls st louis blues mon treal canadiens and buffalo sabres was the guest speaker at the tourneys coaches night on wednesday more than 200 hockey week coaches managers and organiz ers listened to bowmans half- hour talk and 45minute question- andanswer session held at the centennial centre those who missed it can make amends by watching wednes days toronto maple leaf game on chch tv the talk will be shown during one of the intermis sions meanwhile the actual hockey week tournament runs from march 30 to april 12 its billed as the worlds largest competition by the town of markham which is spending 25000 to provide offi cials free ice time and trophies a total of more than 2300 boys and girls on 136 markham thor- nhill and unionvillemilliken teams are scheduled to play 188 games in five arenas thornhill frank king sports editor an expected markham- stouffville girls basketball battle turned out to be anything but at tuesdays area f elementary school finals instead the fourteam affair turned out to be a rout for milliken mills public school and mar khams reesor park ps they swept past orchard park and ballantrae to meet in the championship with milliken earning a 2019 upset triumph lori palermo turned out to be the hero hooping the winning bas ket with 14 seconds left to give milliken the title it capped an amazing comeback as the squad was behind 168 at halftime there was incredible jubula- tion screaming and hugging it was great said bill mcmahon who coached milliken with bever ly hazlett as for why his girls pulled off the win over favored reesor park mcmahon noted we stayed calm and didnt make too many unforced errors and to tell you the truth i dont think reesor had been in such a close game and they be came concerned near the end- millikcn knocked off ballantrae 2411 to reach the game was poorly played by both teams said coach kerry keller but we did what we had to to win kingston looked beat be fore they started what could have been a tragic situation occured with about six minutes left in the game when a kingstons scott bevins fell to the ice after a hard check against the boards there was some fear that ho might have broken his neck as he lay motionless on the ice and an ambulance was called fortunately bevins was not seriously injured he was ex amined at scarborough centen ary hospital and then released the clippers are the defending bb champions but midland is their semifinal opponent and will be stouffvilles toughest test of the season said keller during the season the clippers only lost 11 games but three of them were to midland theyre the only team weve had problems with they play very good hockey keller ex plained this is the series weve been waiting for hopefully we wont be disappointed last year midland played in the a division but dropped to bb for this season keller added they eliminated paris to advance to the semifinals in their three previous meet ings midland beat stouffville 54 21 and 51 the clippers go into tins series without the
