years i feel i must reply to the comments made by mayor bell in the weekender of sept 20 there is only one point that i can agree with mrs bell 6000000 is only a drop in the bucket to build a racing facility i should know myself and several other people have been trying for over two years to con struct such a complex the con struction of a racing facility is a multimillion dollar undertaking street racing does exist in mar kham i have been involved in the past and know of people now using the roads as the only place that they can go to race this use of our public roadways puts everyone at a great risk to life and limb the consequences of one wrong move can spell dis aster it is only a matter of time until an incident will occur we must solve this problem now the com petitive urge has been a part of mankind since the dawning of time why else would we taxpayers be building all the hockey rinks baseball diamonds swimming pools and closing the roads to let people run motorsports are the largest paid attendance sport in the usa it is bigger than baseball foot ball basketball and horse racing there is a true interest in racing in our area the success of the supercross at the fairgrounds the tractor pulls canadian champion motorcycle rider paul mcmillan four time world champion hill- climber and markham citizen of the year john williams and his sons mike weatherall on snow- mobiles and the several people in volved in the players challenge series these men and many more i missed travel thousands of miles each year and all call markham home they represent to the rac ing public a long list of accom plishments that are hard to achieve our town tells us that john wil liams has risen to the top of his chosen love in life and then tells us that racing in markham is a joke and ridiculous what does this say to us it tells us you can be the best in the world just dont do it in markham markham is extremely proud of its industrial areas one of the most valued is the automotive in dustry car makers have used racing as a testing ground and de velopment tool since the first car had wheels these are the same parts that are used in racing vehicles several of todays safety devices which we have taken for granted first appeared in the racing world these include such minor things as seatbelts disc brakes and rearview mirrors how about getting it off the streets and not ha ving it any place legal these are not my words they are the words of a person who has a great deal of say over land use the mayor does she wish people to assume the risk and pay out over 6 mil lion as in the recent brampton set tlement i hope not with todays modern technolo gy comes several improvements in all aspects of the racing world one of these is the development of high performance mufflers that will reduce sound levels to accept able limits street racing has also been around since the beginning of time people would see who had the fastest horse or who could be the first to run to school times have changed traffic congestion and larger populations leave no safe place to street race there never really was a com pletely safe place then something happened businessmen found that people would pay to watch races and rac ers would pay to have a chance to win prizes all racers ask for is a safe place to go where there are proper faci lities for both public safety and proper organization this is in the best interest of everyone in volved the success of the molson indy in toronto showed everyone that the race fan of today has changed considerably since a young girl named carole bell drove in the powder puff race at the long gone oakwood stadium race track in toronto gord hooper markham again a salute to women in business national business womerfs week october 1925
