another horse for her son andrew one for her hus band dave and one more for her self quarterhorse racing was the furthest thing from the familys mind they had a farm and whats a farm without horses right they took lessons and met up with a man who was interested in racing he convinced jennies husband to enter his horse stylish skipper in a quarterhorse race one day that day was june 8 1980 gennie remembers it well the horse was an unknown and the announcer call ing the race was smooth as usual until he uttered the immortal words at the wire its stylish skipper- where did she come from the excitement of seeing those stouffville trucker wins i at nationals a 24yearold stouffville man placed first in the vanpick up class at the national truck show in markham last weekend ronald owners like the cuthbertsons have been trying for years to get extended days more betting days will attract more spectators more money and ultimately more respect for an in dustry that began centuries ago when smart work horses were cross bred with wild mustangs for econo mic reasons the offspring were tough intelligent and athletic horses that would work tirelessly on the farm seven days a week it was the american cowboy who started quarterhorse racing by taunting his buddies to try and beat his animal down dirt roads which were usually a quartermile long by the 1940s the backroads drag ging became an organized industry among the top quarterhorse ear ners in ontario the past four years skipper jamer a cuthbertson pro digy has been a superior race barrel hunter and pleasure horse the versatility of the breed unlike thoroughbreds makes it possible to train the horses for other events af ter their race days are over gennie says shed like to retire from racing someday and raise brood mares instead she calls the horses on her farm her future pro duction line still once youre bitten by the race bug its hard to quit she sug gests i am the worlds worst loser when it comes to money and the worlds worst winner too the cuthbertsons and friends race at picov downs in ajax from may to october the betting days fall on sundays starting july 6 quarterhorse racing will move to markham make available adequate information to the public regarding and to consider a proposed official plan amendment to bo passed pursuant to section 17 of the planning act this is a third public meeting concerning the community of btoomington proposed official plan amendment no 25 the previous public meetings were held on august 7th and october 2nd 1984 subject property the subject lands abut and surround the existing community of bloomington which is located at the intersection of the btoomington road and the ninth concession road in part of lots 9 1 0 and 1 1 concessions 8 and 9 a plan showing the subject lands may be obtained by contacting the planning department explanatory note the proposed amendment would change the land use designations on the subject lands and related policies
