a4 tribune april 23 1986 editors mail unfair the issue related to day care within our school system is one thats close to my heart while its true some may say im hardhearted in this regard i feel its unfair for parents to foist the responsibilities of childrearing on our teachers and education in general i also consider it unfair that boys and girls some only a few years out of their cradles should be denied the love and day care that only mothers and fathers can and should provide further in this day and age of high tech thinking its high time wouldbe parents gave a little high tech thought to what responsibili ties are involved in the raising of a child i say if parents cant care for it they shouldnt have it certainly dont expect our schools to perform a babysitting service oldfashioned perhaps but at least i can sleep with a clear consci ence which is more than many mod ernday mothers can do kathryn gould rr 3 stouffville cold like you i enjoyed the figure skating clubs carnival immense ly however like others i had one complaint it was cold strange isnt it how our town can apparently afford a 2 v4 million dollar rec centre yet cant afford to heat it the old arena was jim thomas- editorials feeling of excitement theres a feeling of excitement and ex pectation within stouffvilles downtown core the kind of excitement and ex- all schools several schools in york region in cluding whitchurchstouffville partici pated in the youth alcohol and drug awareness program april 15 to 22 the workshops were held at the grade 6 level while somewhat high pressure a grandstand performance for parents the information provided was excellent and the way it was provided was also excellent a nononsense approach to a very serious problem what amazed us most was how much these young people eleven and twelve- yearolds already know mothers were shaking their heads in disbelief this is part of the problem kids today have learned too much from the wrong sources many are streetwise and this is bad the workshops pulled no punches it was a straightfromtheshoulder approach participating students are the beneficiaries but the program shouldnt stop at grade 6 it should extend through grades 7 and 8 and include all schools in the region not just a few board of education make it compulsory after years of threshing aimlessly about at the secondary level heres a program that works lets use it to all students advantage pectation that hasnt been seen here in years the news wednesday that up to eight businesses would be or already are undergoing exterior improvements has produced an outlook of optimism within the area we feel the hiring of urban design consultant juris berzins to complete a streetscape and facade design study was an excellent move on the part of the business improvement area board the chamber of commerce and the town results both present and future speak for themselves while initially hesitant concerning the cost 10000 we now feel the finalized figures a bargain for as the consultant explained the two streetscape and facade design must go handinhand the key of course has been the de molition and current reconstruction of the sanders block this work has cre ated a momentum that hopefully wont stop until stouffville newlook business core becomes a reality many people are bandwagon- jumpers whatever the occasion the fad the in- thing they immediately want to be part of it take the blue jays for instance last fall folks not knowing the difference be tween a baseball and a football suddenly became blue jay fans you could tell didnt bill singer throw a great game one would say sure did the other would reply and how about that triple hit by big john mayberry singer hasnt thrown for the jays since 1977 and mayberry was given his release three seasons ago its the same with the leafs people with little or no interest in hockey were suddenly caught up in the excitement of the torontochicago series it showed there too stupid plaudits for players like darryl sittler glenn hall and lanny mcdonald long since retired or traded whats the favorite sports attraction at your house at ours its mixed ive always been a rabid baseball and hockey fan this has rubbed off on sons barry and paul bar ry also enjoys football i hate it a game played by animals i say marylynns our only female baseball booster for her the sun rises and sets on jays catcher ernie whitt unfortu nately ernies on the disabled list so her interest has waned considerably hurting her even more is the fact shes also on the disabled list slammed her left hand against a desk at school the other day and broke a finger the injury will sideline her at least two weeks just when she was preparing herself men tally and physically for spring training marylynn lives for softball and so do we seldom missing a game right now its fun win or lose she loves the game i hope it remains this way while pitchings no 1 shes content to play any position even catcher she dis plays a lot more courage than her father while hesitant to admit it she comes by her pitching prowess if i may mod estly call it that from her mothers side of the family her three uncles were ex cellent moundmasters in their heyday and so im told was her grandfather stouffvilles bruce stapley a former coach and presently a columnist for the tribune weekender gave her the nickname goose after onetime yank- eee fireballer goose gossage while any similarity between marylynn and the goose is purely coincidental she doesnt seem to mind in fact shell nev er be satisfied until she sees him play in person trouble is its a long drive from stouffville to san diego more important than meeting her namesake is getting herself in shape for the new season while her throwing arms ready and willing her catching hands encumbered by a cast that keeps her way off balance the ball either rolls along the ground or sails over the nearest tree her softball spirit is much the same rock bottom or high as a kite no happy medium what she needs is a backyard coach who can build up her skills and her confi dence i i try yes i willingly handle the catch ing chores but my text book instruction is probably doing more harm than good but time will tell when the stouffville lions square off against canadian tire in the squirt league season opener the batters had better be on their toes for the goose presently laboring under the impediment of a clipped wing will have to adjust her delivery to fit the occasion and the results could be hor rendous her mother will be there but ill be in hiding i cant bear to look a mortally wounded umpire is not a pretty sight our growing pains by barbara smith in stouffville controversy escalates whenever an increase in population is discussed comments ranging from it was fine as it was why cant they leave things alone and we need to move with the times are vehemently expressed remember when playing chicken crossing main street on a saturday morning was only an occasional hazard when grocery shopping could be com pleted minus steeltoed shoes are our store aisles becoming narrower i can recall when my mail arrived in smile of the week when space permits id like you to include this memory in your smile of the week column before the advent of modern machines like combines and forage harvesters threshing and silo- filling bees were common on most farms it wasnt unusual to have fifteen to twenty men involved they work ed up tremendous appetites one man we all knew had a habit of eating three times as much as all the rest and three times as fast on this particular day i cut out a huge piece of apple pie and placed it on his dessert dish inside the fill ing i mixed a large quantity of horse raddish when hed finished his mountain of first course he lit into the pie like it came from the last apple on the tree with the first mouthful he leaped from the table and ran to the sink to wash it down i sat there not daring to smile if hed commuter town one is forced to accept change real estate is thriving and smallness is fast dis appearing two things however remain little rental accommodation and few jobs some its true are earning in excess of 30000 a year while others takehome pay is 16000 even less places to rent are not only scarce but more than most can afford employ ment opportunities are just as limited and generally pay only minimum wage if council feels growth is necessary why arent affordable rentals and em ployment part of the plan is it our politi cians intent to eliminate all but the affluent the way it was a
