p4 weekender january 4 1986 mmammmamammbmmamm iniiiwi ihii weefcender mmen private delivery needed although canada post has been unfairly attacked in recent years there is little doubt that the crown corporation is in deep trouble both managerially and financially and the incoming president of the post office will have his work cut out for him in turning things around intractible unions layers of bureaucracy and overall ineffi ciency have prevented canada post from streamlining its operation perhaps the federal government should take a different approach it might be best to eliminate canada post altogether and allow private firms to take over mail delivery in areas where mail service is not profitable such as in remote parts of the country the government could provide a modest subsidy to keep postal rates at a reasonable level it would provide a fresh start for mail service and would quickly eli minate the current problems of making a large government cor poration both profitable and respon sive to the needs of customers dismantling canada post is the quickest way to solve the problem its drastic action yet that is whats needed to provide improved cost- efficient mail service
