traffic tieup friday markham firefighters stood by yesterday morning as two tow trucks tried to right an overturned tanker truck follow ing a fivevehicle mishap on hwy 7 west of warden the tanker filled with diesel fuel overturned when it swerved to avoid colliding with other vehicles on the rain slicked road there were no serious injuries and ontario provin cial police are investigating don rooms should be functional come tuesday said unionville high school principal ken cluley last wednesday he said things have been extremely busy as school officials attempt to regis ter the over 1000 students enrolled but added things are getting pretty ex citing as construction nears completion on the warden ave facility all that re mains to be finished are the dance studio and the gymnasium mr cluley pointed out that gym classes will be held outside until its completion and said that although the technical area wont be finished the classes wont be needed un til the next semester theyve done some marvellous things in the last three or four weeks trying to get things into shape he noted there is still a considerable amount of work to be done at brother andre catho lic high school a relocatable building constructed until a permanent school is built on the site principal blair day assured the weekender that students will be there on tuesday we certainly expect to be open on tuesday mr blair noted we will have about 223 enrolled students who will be here he predicted that the only areas in the school that wont be functional on open ing day are the gymnasium and the lib rary he expects the gym to be com pleted by early october and is currently awaiting resource material for the lib rary well be open in the sense that yes the students will be taught but workers will be here for another three weeks or so he said up until this year catholic high school students in markham and unionville were bused to st robert high school in thornhill this school is long overdue and mar kham people deserve it mr day said thank god we finally got it to take the pressure off st roberts in its first year only grade 9 students will attend brother andre and succes sive grades will be added each year until a permament school is constructed on the 16th ave site this school will be here for a few years the students attending are really going to be pioneers he said lights soon on warden traffic lights at warden ave and whitehall dr near unionville high school may soon be a reality ward 3 councillor fred cox said the lights are now being designed and the proposal will be forwarded to york re- gions engineering committee on tuesday if its approved they regional offi cials promised that wednesday morn ing they would at least get the construc tion crews there to put up the lights he said mr cox cautioned that it may take a week before the lights would be in ser vice but that in the interim a police officer would be stationed to ensure stu dents safety as they cross the street united way goal at 1 million the york region united way has set its 1986 campaign goal at 1 million- thats how much the organization esti mates it will need in the upcoming year to adequately look after the social service agencies under its umbrella the goal is the same as last years but executive director mary ruth flood stres sed that this is the bare minimum neces sary to fund united way programs the demands for services are expected to increase in all communities two new agencies have been added to our list she said the campaign begins sept 13 and con tinues until nov 22 mrs flood said that although the drive is conducted across the rregion we have to really depend on mar kham vaughan and richmond hill to make up the bulk she said that markham leads the way in donations and that the goal for the town 225925 is a 23 per cent increase over last years the largest donation to united way in 1984 was 39000 from steelcase canada ltd of the top five contributions last year three others also came from markham businesses namely american express becongage and magna international steelcase has started the ball rolling this year by pledging 16700 to the campaign but the employees of the company will be gin raising funds when the campaign starts increasing steelcases total dona tion the united way raises money to support 30 social service agencies from the red cross society to the markham family life centre last year allocations ranged from 2948 to 56000 depending on such factors as the need for the service and the cost of maintaining it 30000 damage markham firelighters look for a flare up in the housefire on victory ave in milliken tuesday morning fifteen firefighters in three trucks were called to the scene and had everything under control
