runs to victory in perrier race unionville waitress claims title by donna cox staff reporter shes 18 from unionville and the fastest little waitress in southern ontario donna bradley a parttime waitress at the unionville house restaurant won the third annual perrier waiters race for the toronto area last sunday bettering her fourth- place finish of last year she admitted winning the event was a big surprise they called out the second place winners name and it was someone i had beat said ms bradley who was upset be cause she thought she had been disqualified ms bradley explained that the person who had placed first was disqualified for touching her bottle on the tray and spilling too much water rules state that contestants were not allowed to spill water past the top of the label on the 750 ml perrier bottle that amounts to approximately one inch of water ms bradley who lost very little water during the five- km run was then awarded first place she now advances to the canadian cham pionships in montreal the weekend of august 16 her en tire weekend will be payed for by perrier unionville house owner terry cowan said he might close his restaurant for the weekend and take the staff to montreal to cheer ms bradley on ms bradleys chances of winning the canadian cham pionship appear to be good at least if previous winners are any indication for the past two years the women better this year ms bradley said that she didnt enter the competition the first year it was held be cause she had a softball game but the next year she entered thinking it would be fun first place prizes included the sponsorship to montreal a silver cup a perrier patio umbrella a perrier tshirt a perrier sun visor and several bottles of perrier this september ms brad ley will be in grade 13 at mar kham district high school when she graduates she hopes to go to university and take physical education ms bradley is interested in many sports including basket ball volleyball windsurfing and regions united way dennis mills is the new chairman of the 1985 york region united way fundraising campaign mr mills a onetime aide to former prime minister pierre trudeau is vice president of corporate affairs at magna in ternational inc a diversified manufactur er of auto parts and one of the regions largest employer mr mills said he accepted the challenge because he views united way agencies as an essential part of the social fabric of the region in addition magnas corporate dennis mills new chairman philosophy advocates a strong social com mitment to the communities in which their employees live he sees his first task as building a cam paign team of community leaders and is well under way having already recruited key corporate and community volunteers who will head up the entire responsibility of financially supporting the united way is being borne by only 270 com panies and a few private individuals he said there are over 8000 businesses and companies in york region and i have just sent a personal letter to each one urging them and their employees to become in volved in this years campaign i view united way as a part of the whole community shared and supported by all he continued and our campaign team will work to get everyone in york region involved to broaden that base of sup port mr mills says a campaign goal will not be decided upon until late this summer after the united ways agency review pro cess i know the dedication of agencies volunteers and staff and the help they offer to everyone in the community i know their requests for support was a shortfall in funds from fares turned over to the town by the firm which operated markham transit for 11 years town officials refuse to comment on the issue until it goes to court a court date climate of deregula tion will be a boon to efficient turboprop service nordair president jean e douville noted that cooperation between sche duled turboprop and jet service will prove to be a powerful competitive tool in a de regulated air industry environment both men stressed that the new firm could provide smaller communities with more frequent service and greater capac ity as the exisiting
