demn the method and procedure used it was disgraceful to abuse the democra tic process such as was done is little short of a crime thank god for people in our commun ity who have the courage of their perform ances thursday of the royal lipizzan stallions in the stouffville arena here linda herrmann a member of the herr- mann family leads show horse ambassador neapolitano around the ring sjoerd eager to watch the worldfamous lipizzan stallions from austria demonstrate the magnificence of a longlost art under the guidance of patriarch otto- mar herrmann the herrmann family and their 18 touring stallions demonstrated with flare the war manoevers for which the lipizzan was created these actions date back to 400 bc the movements are older than the lipiz zan horses themselves ottomar told his audience the herrmanns and their stallions thril led the audience with their demonstration of the airs above the ground manoevers the most prized of all lipizzan moves the capriole the most deadly of the airs above the ground was the first per formed two welltrained horses were led to the centre of the ring where they leaped into the air horizontally tucking in their front legs and kicking out with their hind legs at the height of the jump this jump was used to attack enemy forces during battle the capriole was later performed with mount no stirrups or safety equip ment was used one of the highlights of the show was the triple capriole three mounted stallion did a capriole in synchrony other highlights included the courbet- te one of the most strenuous of the airs this manoever in which the stallion leaps forward on his hind quarters three or four timesnot touching the ground with his fore feet was performed by only the strongest of the lipizzan the levade was one of the most popu lar with the audience most were in awe of the stallions ability to squat deep on his haunches and hold a 45 angle for several seconds this movement was developed to raise the leading officer above the scene of battle to survey his position after the last courbette was per formed the audience listened attentively to colonel ottomar herrmann as he told his fascinating story ofhow general george patton helped the lipizzan escape battle during world war ii the show concluded with a stunning pre sentation of the military quadrille throughout the program both horses and riders performed with the grace and ele gance of balerinas every member of the herrmann family was dressed in a very lavish military uniform from the renaiss ance era the stallions were perfectly groomed with braided manes and tassles to match their mounts clothing the herrmanns and their talented lipiz- zans will continue their tour across ontario before returning home to florida in octo ber to commence winter training a shame to the editor ive been following the marie adams fiasco with considerable interest from her initial application until now i cant believe whats happening here regardless of whether or not one agrees with the project the buckpassing and poli tical posturing thats gone on is unbeliev able members of council who continually play up to mrs adams opponents should be ashamed the chairman of the ontario municipal board must surely be wondering whos running our to wn in my opinion he had no alternative but to wash his hands of the whole affair why should
