okeefes daryl starts as a rogue but turns into a arrogant creep while de mornays debbie comes across with all the spirit of a puppy she apologetically seeks out her own career with all the assertion of an eight- year old leaving home because her parents wont let her stay up and watch tv theres no tension between the charac ters and thus no interest strike two with the ex ception of a few heavy hitters the performances are quite weak neil simon doesnt seem to have given much spir it to either de mornays char- acter or the character played by the other female lead canadian lisa langlois and their performances are quite weak okeefe is a bit better but his arrogance remains siij perficial without anothe strong character to challenge it unfortunately the only heavy hitters here are stuck uj the dugout randy quaid and cleavant derricks are quite funny as darryls fellow playj ers but they dont get much time onscreen the only other solid comic performance comj es from film director martin ritt norma rae sounder as the braves coach who dropj a few quite funny lines that match his crusty character c strike three theres a pretty funny spirit running throughout this movie but no thing ever seems to com together its as though no one quite had their heart in ic while there are some funny scenes there arent quite enough the baseball scenes particularly the last game lack suspense the songs
