great taste pickering high school students first pickering at pickering high school as at other durham public secondary and elementary schools the students come first jim robb now in his tenth- year as principal of picker ing high is straight forward about his schools commit ment to students i feel the stu dents come first and i try to give them as much of my personal attention as possible if im in the office and doing something ill put it down if a student comes in and wants to see me im not going to say make an appointment for three days from now mr robb feels pickering students are getting a fair shake from a very responsible and re sponsive group of people the staff of the school who are concerned about them about what they are doing and why theyredoing it well go through a lot with a student before we get to the point of saying theres not much more than we can do so we spend a lot of time dealing with students who are good students and with students who arent so good stu dents come first there are 81 teachers at picker ing high school serving about 1400 pupils at the time of its construction in 1951 the school was run by the pickering district high school board and was later incorporated into the ontario county board of education its now the durham board of education initially picker ing high was the only public secon dary school between scarborough and whitby today however the area has three public secondary schools pickering dun- barton high school and ajax high school together they serve about 4160 students a year mr robb began teaching in toronto in 1958 after work ing as a regular classroom instruc tor and head of a secondary school history department he became vice- principal of picker ing hs in 1964 moved to whitbys henry street high school as principal in 1969 then re turned to pickering as principal in 1974 a fully compre hensive school pickering offers- academic business and technical prog rams a semester system allows stu dents maximum fle xibility in course selection we stress three things mr robb said first of all academic excell ence i think we have a pretty good academic reputa tion second the de velopment of the in dividual in terms of extracurricular activities ahd the third area we look at is the interpersonal social side in this school weve managed over the years to provide more varie ty for students for example were one of the few schools in the region that offers latin french spanish german and ita lian the variety of modern languages and latin offered at the school is partly to cover the ethnic spread in the area and also to cover the students who are just interested in languages the principal said pickering also offers a full range of math and science options the school provides a complete basic general and a d v a h eed hi a program until grade 11 and a general and adv anced program in grades 12 and 13 i think we meet the standards the community ex pects they want their children to achieve a high school education and we do our very best to provide it mr robb concluded mrs jack symes j recovers by marjorie woodland fourth line mrs jack symes is home following a threeweek stay at centenary hospital scarborough she is making satisfactory recovery from gall stone surgery former goodwoodarea resident dr penny uhrig husband james and their young daughter emily are home visiting pennys mother mrs jean dawson the uhrigs are on a wellearned holiday after a threeyear term in nepal and india where theyve been supplying medical aid to the native populations penny and james also a doctor spent much of their time working inisolated areas sympathy of the community is extended to the family of the late sean convery who was killed in a tragic accident while vac- tioningin florida last week sean 18 wasa- student at uxbridge secondary school pastor gary manzo is back in the pulpit at goodwood united church after a trip home to detroit he visited his father who is in ill health the baptist congregation has surpassed its goal of raising 1000 for ethiopian re lief of the total 450 will be used to purch ase tools for devastated areas in the third world we are enjoying the fellowship and ser vices of two young men while theyre attending the newlybuilt baptist lead ership training school at whitby the school provides a yearof christian training for young people enabling them to become more dedicated and efficient in christian service the young people are planning a fellowship supper in their honor on satur day march 23 at 6 pm games and con tests will follow the following is a poem entitled the baptist sunday school win ter picnic on march the ninth in eightyfive our winter picnic and sakes alive what fun we had at goodwood church we met at two mothers and dads and quite a few of young folks too we headed north till we reached slloam and there we found at the don moore home a welcome mat many went skating on the rink while others tried skiing or so i think some were glad enough to sink in a fireside chair with a nice hot drink after the fun the supper was spied at a bountiful table laid with pride noisy voices soon subside as appetites keen are satisfied all too soon its nearly eight how did it ever get so late time to gather op our freight and wave goodbye from the garden gate
