sa4 wednesday august 3 1983 y cjjwv v editors mau our guests i v- dear editor i was pleased with the coverage your paper provided the scouts visit to whitchurchstouffville from england i was disappointed however that nothing was done by our town in the way of hosting some sort of recep tion for our guests aside from efforts put forward by bob and eileen gayton and the pre sence of councillor sainsbury on the saturday the municipality vir tually ignored this event although not personally associ ated with this activity i feel our lack of involvement points to a major failing here public relations doesnt appear to hold a very high priority surely a few sandwiches and a coke in latcham hall wouldnt have been too much to expect weve done it for ball and hockey teams so why not for scouts sincerely helen fox rr 3 stouffviue f thank you dear editor i received my copy of the tri bune yesterday and was thrilled with the publicity provided the brit ish scouts visit to south lake sim- coe district and whitchurch- stouffville- i trust someone will take the time to send afew issues of your paper back home so the boys and girls parents will discover how much we appreciated their pre sence here thanks for providing the event the coverage it deserved sincerely joyce burden rr 1 cedar valley r ttte trtbune james thomas editor established 1888 bruce annan publisher joe anderson lake in the bruces mill con- servatic area one ay there is the next day there isnt t a publics confused when this newspaper spoke with land management division administrator paul flood july 21 about another mat ter he offered us the information con cerning bacteria buildup at bruces mill he wasstraightforward and hon est wanting users of the park to under- stand that while the site would be open- the swim area would not he explained that weeks of dry weather was responsi ble- that the flowthrough of water was not sufficient to meet public health stan dards this was understandable bruces mill wasnt the only conservation area affected a heavy rain mr flood said would remedy the situation but the heavy rain never came at least not before friday and yet wednesday morning cfrb was announcing on its earlymorning news that swimming had resumed those closest to the operation at bruces mill realize that without a swim area thepark would be something less than a financial success many in fact refused to enter the grounds after the no swimming signs were erected our hope is thata fear of dwindling attendance wasnt back of the decision to once again reopen the beach if it was then the management should be called up on the carpet if it wasnt then health authorities obviously erred in their read ings which was it the public has a right to know attention jalljsmall car drivers time we standup for our rights once and for all- as a small car owner myself hindu downright rude of larger vehicles such as those gasguzzling eight cylinder monsters and gargantuan trucks to try and bully me off the road just because they might travel at a faster pace or are five times the size tough bananas small car drivers have just as much right to travel the highways and the biways as anyone else since im trying to be a smart consumer by owning a fourcylinder car to help with the socall gas shortage and pollu tion problems i think i should be praised for my act of bravery driving becomes like a battle field when youre thrown into some of those rushhour traffic jams with- a bunch of clods at the wheels its definitely in sane but what other choice do you have dont get me wrong there are crazy small car drivers also but i havent had as many cross my path and create as much havoc as the larger bullies it amazes me especially when travell ing on the highway to sec the habits of those drivers in the big posh expensive cars who sit nuzzelleddecp in a plush scat with their head tilted back and arm hanging out the window its almost like see world look at me as4hey drive along looking as ifthey own the world they sometimes have a sudden urgejo makva lane change r when i took a safe driving education course i was also taught to check my blind spots before changing lanes but many large car drivers have the most demented way of doing so instead of moving their head which is perched so cozy on the head rest they just glance into the mirror and zoom across each lane believe me its not a pleasant feeling when youre just about forced into the guardrail or off on the shoulder of the road because they dont see you my car may be small but it does exist theres also nothing more irritating then to be driving along on a major high way at 100 km just minding your own business when suddenly out of the blue roars a large oldsmobile or cadillac busseling along at a minimum of 150 km at these supersonic speeds they have no hesitation to pass from behind within a hair length which can certainly cause the poor driver in the small car to go into cardiac arrest its times like these when i wish i could calmly press a little button on the dash board and have a submachine gun pop out from the hood and flatten all four tires of the passing vehiclevunfortunate ly thats not possible but the next best thing is the trudeau salute i swear some drivers must- take courses like learning to drive the in die 500 way bozo driving school luna tic haven or wacky driving in 10 easy lessons aside from the cars there are those huge transport trucks which tend to send shivers up my spine just thinking about them they are often the worst because of their massive size and the ability they have to practically scare you to death many truck drivers have the habit of waiting to plan their attack from behind when the small car driver is most unsus pecting the worst time is at night when all is dark and they suddenly attack like big monsters from outerspace dark ness is all you see out of the rearview mirror but within seconds there are two headlights so close behind you could swear theyre in your backseat some truck drivers just dont have the courtesy to leave you in peace because if you dont move when they want you to then they tend to ride on you back bum per in the hopes of bulldozing you off the road a summer community the stouffviue business community is often unmindful of whats taking place outside village boundaries due to the fact their livelihood is dependent solely on cash customers that walk through their doors we would suggest they take a long hard look at from whence during the summer months many of these cash customers originate while theyre not wearing name tags we know from talking with them here and visiting with them there the major ity are residents of the more than 500 trailer sites at musselmans lake every summer a veritable village is born at cedar beach this migration of families from all areas of ontario and the united states creates a compact community unequalled in the area many are permanent theyve been spending their summers at the lake since the camp was first established back in 1963 and they love it some are firsttimers they also love it and theyll be back theyre blunt ab out saying so its close to entertainment in toronto and close to shopping in stouffviue we couldnt want for more one father of three told the tri bune saturday he and his family are from long island new york thousands of visitors pass through town on the way to the sales barn flea market every saturday thousands more camp on our doorstep cedar beach every summer unfortunately we cant see the forest for the trees need town planner could have been made locally that were v almost automatically shifted to a consul- tant for a report and recommenda tions whether members wished a pro- fessional opinion or were afraid to bite the bullet is a matter of opinion re- gardless such procedures will now cease decisions will be made at home with recommendations coming from an individual wholl be acquainted not that outside planners werent with both sides of the story doing a satisfactory job they probably while costs will undoubtedly increase were but planning is such an important they always do the extra expense whitchurchstouffville will add a pro- i fessional planner to its municipal staff a good move- its a sign that were growing up indeed that weve come of age while changes in the provincial plan ning act ha ve forced council to make the switch we feel the switch was needed regardless v the time and not just when the service is place a planner on permanent staff this needed v tootells us somethingthat eight other on occasions
