than seventy percent of members present gave the thumbs down sign on sup porting the project according to lion presi dent ron graham mem bers were dissatisfied with the lack of information sup plied at the recent open house held by members of council and the parks and recreation committee and were not prepare to throw their support behind the towns fundraising program we need to have some facts and figures before we give our support to such a project said graham he feels that such a largescale undertaking needs to be dis cussed on a onetoone basis and that it was unfair to ex pect members to support the proposals in their pre sent form graham pointed but that the vote was taken only by members present and that a vote by the full membership might have produced a different result asked if the club might re- consider its stance graham felt that when proposals are more concretethe lions would no doubt look at the project more closely the vote is by no means irrev ersible but we need a lot more information than just having a figure of around four million dollars thrown tousj he concluded atoms meet the sound of music atom clippers have advanced to the second round of the play offs opinion by jim holt sports editor last week at a meet ing of the bauantrae lions club members voted not to support either in concept or financially the building of our new arena thisto say the least is tragic not only for the com munity as a whole but also for future genera tions of kids who will long after we have gone still be living here and hopefully enjoying the collective spirit and atmosphere that such a complex engenders i have always been a great admirer of the bal lantrae lions over the years they have built up a reputation of being one of the finest clubs in ontario i know many of the members some are close friendsand i find it difficult to believe that such a respected orga nisation would turn its back on a cause so vital to the continuing spirit and well being of our community what to do i am well aware that there are those amongst us who do not want any kind of are na or complex con structed but for what reason surely it cant be money despite the parsimonious attitude of some council members who seem to think every thing must be done as cheaply and slowly as possible the figures themselves prove that even amilli6h dollars would cost only 25 a year per householder as ijallantraes parks and recreation commit tee representative mol ly mcmanningwell so succinctly observed what is one less cup of coffee per week worth bravo molly unfortu nately not everyone has your unselfish reasoning or generosity of spirit i would hate to think that the attitude of the ballantrae lions club might become conta gious but there is a dan- gerof that others of similar ilk might well throw up their hands in disgust and give up any plans of their own what is needed is aswiftly formed fundraising committee notsix months down the road when everyones efforts have become frag mented but now im mediately perhaps our esteemed mayor could change his public image by becom ing eldred the ready and move swiftly in this direction as that most famous of orators creational facilitiesin our community a hot issue and popular platform in at least two municipal elections it follows therefore that the concept of a new re- creational facility has the support of the major ity of our community undoubtedly a wide variety of opinions on ev ery dimensiqnoilthe complexilltevbiced and taken into account to ensure that the end- re sult conforms as closely as possible to the will of the majority as a ser- vice club do we not sup port the majority of the community regard less of our individual opinions on layout cost location etc which we will have plenty of opportunity to voice out side the club it seems to me that all service clubs should support enthu siastically and construc tively such a commun ity project ofsuch dimension and import j r r despite
