b2the tribune wednesday december 8 1982 the stouffville midgets faced their toughest competition yet when they came up against the ajax major midget squad last week in backtotback tournament play in ajax on thursday evening the clippers stayed with their hosts until the third period when the ajax power play capitalized on two consecutive opportuni ties for a 74 win mike anderson led the clipper scoring tally with a pair with sing les from bill hutchison and chris brown the following even- ing sa w stouffville host ajax and play one of their best games of the season to edge their visitors 65 mike anderson again played a strong game scoring two goals- including the winner- and killing off a number of penal ties chris brown added a pair while mike feasby added a single the clippers have proved that they are capable of playing in a much high classifica tion within the omha whereas the ajax aa major midgets have been together for four years last year as minor midgets ajax went all the their big effort but he insists that they can do better if only they will learn to play for a full three periods the edwards- murphy sponsored squad play at home ev ery wednesday night this years high school midget basket ball team have one thing in common they are all rookies although a number played at grade eight level last year none have previously played at midget level pivot of the team is their captain wayne cheng who inevit ably because of the in- tensisty of his play dominates the boards he also displays a fine layup backup centre is jim stephenson who is obviously eager to learn with enough practice jim will un doubtedly prove a team keystone if only because of his size an undoubted asset to any team the forwards are gaining more experi ence with each game rob hart is rapidly be- coming one of the teams better re- bounders while john petrie also proving useful under the boards is developing a nice stance at the base line this years guards are all good ball hand- lers sheldon ren- nicks standing a cool 5 is a coaches dream no not his height but his ability to listen and obey instructions thereare occasions when he can even be caught trying to get the reboundlefthander keith grose is adept at dribbling and is shap- ingup well shawn duncalfc and bill hughes have the abil ity but- will have to slow their game down a little so as toi acquire that onboard sixth sense that only comes with discipline prac tice and lots of games alwyn rose may not have too much height another fivefooter but he is a very disci- plined player another guard is chris harper excellent at defense but liemust learn not to reach he will un doubtedly eventually become a backbone on future spartan teams as hegives 100 in ev ery game his flashes of inspiration seem- to rub off on his- team mates this years coach is steve rendall steve has a tough job ahead of him but already his efforts are begining to show a return in their game against the wood- bridge warriors on friday afternoon the midgets held their own right up until the final quarter when the visi tors increased the lead by five more points to take the win 5243 first quarter scores were even at 16 apiece with the spartans lead ing until the final mi nute of play second quarter play saw the spartans trail by 8 points at 3022 but some nice baskets by cheng and hard work by the team brought them within four points3834of the war riors the sustained strong effort by the spartans petered out in the final quarter and the much stronger warriors helped them selves to some nice in tercepts and break aways however the final score was not too hard to take for a team that up until seven days ago was still mak ing cuts all in all the midget spartans are suddenly looking good the family trust atom selects tagged anothrwin on nov29 this time against ux bridge barton sports romping home with an 80 shutout the team played well- putting in an above average per formance with good offence and defence the near riot in the the senior division in what was supposed to be the feature game of the night no less than 70 minutes in penalties when altona autobody met scarborough and took a 31 loss farmer jacks ban tam girls edged leaside 32 despite a defensive attitude by both squads in the opening and second periods the goals not coming until leaside opened the scoring half way through the final frame laurie taylor from tracey shortt replied within a minute of the visitors goal bridgitte edwards from kristin graham replied to leasides second tally it was taylor who potted the winner just three minutes before the buzzer on deanne evans assist jenny altilia played a very strong game on defense and shawn morrison and janette st john shared goal- tending duties with some inspired saves newtonbrook block eked out a 10 win over protective rustproof- ing the solitary goal coming six minutes into the opening frame inspired goaltending by terry piette block ed any further attempts by newton brook to find the net and it was unfortunate that rustproofing failed to find the range michelle coppins played an excellent game for rust- proofing an inspired perform ance by the intermedi ate a m records squad saw them double a strong wiuowdale squad 42 karen brodie opened the scoring on denise coppins assist willow- dale replying before the end of the first a blistering shot by julie thompson half way through the second period the assist coming from hard working dawn stewart while jackie armett got the range when she drove in karen brodies pass to lead 31 with less than two minutes left wil- lowdale found the range setting the pace for an anything can happen third period holding on to their one goal lead the -rust- proofers clinched the win on andrea tnck- ers shot on an empty net in the senior game things got just a little out of hand altona autobody going down 31 against a powerful scarborough squad both teams came ready for battle and battle they did at the drop of the puck the lights flashed and both coaches told their charges to go before they mayhem was complete both teams had been in the box for elbowing slashing in terference tripping h i g h s ti c k i n g apprentice in 1920 and served a five- year indenture before setting out on his own in the village of con cord in 1929 he built a house and shop in the community a few miles north of toronto and ran the business until 1980 when he sold it to a man who had learned his trade at isaacs side at first baker made only harness but as moreand more people cameto his shop he found his business tak- ing on
