literally at the goodwood public schools production of sleepingibeauty last weefci j- not that it was a comedy it wasas the title proclaimed the ageold story of the beautiful princess who has a spell cast on- her by l wicked witch maleficent which can only be broken by a kiss from prince charming its also the old story done to music of good versus evil and thats where the laying in the aisles came in at one point in the story just when it looked worst for the princess the forces of evil were dispatched by the prince with many of them ending up prone in theaisles the aisles played a continuing part in the show as entries exits and even curtain calls were made up and down they were most necessary too to ac- commodate the large cast mostly female in the production which moved at a steady pace and it did move too right from the opening entrance of kelly buckles the engaging and pretty young princess who reminisced with one of her mothers gowns thus setting the stage for the rest of the story to the final scene with that same mother the sleeping beauty of the title donna yeates was a lovely and vulnerable princess both asleep and awake in between these two winning young ladies the three good fairies flora fauna and merryweather played with just the right touchesof levity and oc- casionalpompousness by marina fisher daphne paszterko and vonda woodhouse- skipped about itrying to protect their youthful charge and tell her about her mother when she was a young princess tobt they i had c some formidable op position though in kim clausen the wicked witch maleficent who dominated her evil coworkers and anyone who came near her an excellent performance by kim shannon ainger had her hands full in the role of young prince phillip but did a admirable job the whole cast in fact did well especially considering the small stage the number of set changes carried out- with commendable dispatch and the short time in which they had to crowd in the considerable action directors lori briggs arid frances sells can take their bows here- even without any action or dialogue however some people might have been content just to sit and look at the costumes as colorful imaginative and stylishly done as anyone would want equal plaudits to mrs fisher mrs clausen mrs will mrs hopkins mrs mercer and mrs williams the singing although not par ticularly strong was adequate and the lovely melodic music left people whistling the score as they left the school t mother complains itter sv55 dear jim i would appreciate if if you could find space in your paper for this letter it is directed to those who require the services of a babysitter our daughter has performed this service for a couple of years and most clients have been very fair with respect to remuneration- however she now has folks friends of ours who pay just over 1 an hour it would be an embarrassment to her and impolite to mention it and im possible for us to say anything people dont really know what to pay- on a general basis we feel 150 an hour and 200 after midnight is not too much to expect unless of course course the babysitter must look after infants make supper for the children get them off to bed or cafe for them during the day in such cases it should be more babysitting is very responsible work paying 150 per hour may seem like a lot for just being there and watching tv but its really very little when you try and buy something withit editors mail our thanks the following is a copy of a letter- received by graydon card president of the whitchurchstouffville chamber of commerce from fran sainsbury of the concerned citizens committee it reads as follows dear graydon i want to thank you for attending the pure water rally on april 17 we truly appreciate your concern and that of the other business people in the community we want to thank all those who donated money sold buttons tickets tshirts stouffville cares erected posters arid billboards z this is truly a unique coriimunity people do care for one another its a shame we have this blight on our town together somehow we must convince our- government to close down this operation and purge the site the chamber of commerce has a great deal of strength in ontario we are grateful for your support it was truly a unique effort and we like to think it was done in good taste it marked the first time that environmental groups across the province have joined in a common cause this hopefully will show the ministry of the environment that we in whitchurchstouffville care about our water supply and our future thanks again sincerely the playgroup has been forced to leave the premises and locate in the baptist church the move has irritated some playgroup parents and prompted protest letters to the tribune the most recent over the expenses ran to ap proximately 150000 last year of which we informed the hall we sympathized with the halls in creasing costs but tried to make it clear we board add these could not afford the expenses and its much increase we made a more than a few cents a day it seems like peanuts when you say 35 cents or 150 a day but some days only seven or eight mothers attend do they pay double or triple charge by the counter offer of ap proximately 560 a year which was rejected may i mention at this point that there are similar playgroups in zephyr and udora the zephyr group recently lhadtheir rent increased signature of lynne year and it is oven melnykv sidcroad 10000 ayear a fee from stootp 200 yearlyxp uxbridge tw p reads as some mothers cannot the udora group pay afford our philosophy 100 or 10 per mother has been to have our that would work out to groupopen to all and by j 270 for our group we having a bazaar to raise did not feel that our our- income we allow offer was out of line everyone to contribute what they can afford plus time and talent we felt this was a philosopliywe could not compromise wjthout excluding some mothers and children whenever anyone else wanted the hall and until this year always opened and closed the hall ourselves we would have gladly picked up the key at the custodians house if the option was offered us but it was not- so now the hall stands empty it still costs 25 a day to maintain it and the board is private to the extent that anyone who walks through the door automatically becomes a member of play group and the door is always open the hall boards attitude is typified by mr plewes statement in a letter to the uxbridge timesjournal dated april 14 1982 i quote we find it difficult to comprehend why mrs ird is outthe 560 i r group would have- d f rrc community centre a follows dear editor i wish to respond to mr plewes letter representing the good wood community park and centre association it is not simply a matter of charging- the mothers an extra 35 to 10 cents a day- as- mr plewes states our especially when you consider there is not a high demand for trie hall at 930 on tuesday and thursday mornings for our reduced rent we cleaned up after our selves were bumped paid i take exception to the statement that we are a local group providing a private service we have members coming from the mount albert area privilege that hergrdup deserves whatsis it then a privilege that the hall board confers only upon those they deem worthy com munity is every man woman and child in this north of claremont and township and it is part of 10 miles east and north the hall boards of uxbridge not to mention uxbridge and goodwood we are only mandate that the building be used as fully as possible but this attitude is typical of what we have faced over the last five years more than one member on more than one board has said to us that you are just a coffee clique or our children never had a playgroup and they turned out fine with the unspoken corollary why should yours have one mr plewes received positjve feed- backjfrom the com- munityrstrange butjall our feedback lias been negative i think- the hall board should reassess heir interpretation of what a community hall should be and consider the spirit in which the hall was donated to the community mr lat- chany- would not be pleased clearance up tq 25 off on accessories
