tflc v i fai the tribune wednesday january u 1j82 iv council comments by jim sanders on the council of whitchurchstouffville the concerned citizens group the chamber of commerce and many individuals have used all possible avenues to close and contain the dump site north of the village we played the game of making representation at bearings- we obtained the best people to study the case and speak on our behalf many private citizens spoke we have had the support of many environmental groups such as canadian environmental law assoc pollution probe and greenpeace various scientists and labs have provided evidence which should have been overwhelming the medical officer of health has closed wells near the site throughout we have had meetings with many officials of the ministry of the en vironment we have marched in protest at the dump gates we have met with our local conservative mpp bill hodgson and with the minister of the environment we have explained our case to the press the om budsman has studied our case- in all of this we have been trying to get across four points 1 the dump should not be allowed to continue as it is over a major aquifer 2 the government does not know what is in the site or is being-dumped- 3 adequate measures are not being taken to ensure the quality of water in ontario 4 ontario needs legally defined standards of water quality and only the elected members of the legislature can make such standards the present law blocks us from taking any effective action we are going to continue this struggle until we get adequate protection for our drinking water however the issue will not be resolved until residents throughout the province become concerned citizens and write or phone their local mpp and the following legislators the hon wgdavis premier 9651941 the hon keith norton minister of the environment 9651611 and the hon rh ramsay secretary of resource development 9654297 all letters should be addressed to queens park toronto ont rx leaf fan since a kid back in the late 30s and early 40s ive always rooted for the new york rangers dont ask me why im not really sure the main reason i suppose is that their style of play is for the most part entertaining to watch fast skating good passing and a minimum of rough stuff these credentials plus the fact bryanhextall was once my super hero has left me clinging to the broadway blueshirts through all these years in all honesty therehave been occasions when ive been tempted to throw my support in with toronto players like syl apps ted kennedy johnny bower arid max bentley were almost enough to strip me of my loyalty to the good old rangers almost but not quite i guess the closest ive ever come to ab- cheating mypreteeri ehamor with new york was the season the leafs acquired the ser vices of inge haihmerstrbm remember him he was a beautiful skater the best since the aforementioned bentley and just as good at scoring goals never a game went by that i wasnt glued to the screen and- ham- merstrom was the reason when the toronto brass in their questionable wisdom sent inge packing to st louis i vowed and declared id never watch a leaf game again for the most part ive stuck to mypromise turning it on only on rare occasions as most will admit i havent missed much the majority of encounters at the gardens have been terrible a complete waste of time i can put my wednesday and saturday nights to better use however due to the disgraceful darryl sittler affair my attitude towards the leaf players has mellowed somewhat in recent months i now feel themanagements at fault the same management that dealt so unfairly with the likes of ron ellis and my hero hammerstrom but my irritation doesnt stop with the front office blind ignorance and sheer stupidity is now rubbing off on the fans they displayed liberal ingredients of both saturday- night in theeonstant booing of ex- leaf ian turnbull a defenseman that toiled faithfully and well for toronto through many seasons sure its happened before with rocket richard gordiehowe bobby hull and even bobby orr but for a different reason if i hadnt heard it i wouldnt have believed it i was hoping for turnbull to score if nothing more than to give the boobirds a- taste of their own medicine but it wasnt to be v criticizing a rival in toronto is not un common richard howe hull and orr are prime examples however with turnbull it would have mattered not which sweaterhed been wearing the treatment would havebeen the same with friends like that who needs enemies this saturday edmonton oilers and the great wayne gretzky are in town one cannot help but wonder at the fan reaction to the supreme super star of this pr any other hockey era will he be booed we honestly hope not for the future of our countrys at stake yes civil wars have been started for lesser reasons the 500home dulverton development many said it would never happen and after ten years of discussion we too had become skeptical council and planning board to- their credit never gave upon this project with the closing of one door they opened another until finally an agreement satisfactory- to both sides was finalized while members past and present were involved much of the behindthescenes work was done by mayor eldred king hes to be complimented on bringing this venture to a successful conclusion admittedly all the gains were not on whitchurchstouffvilles side it was a give- andtake arrangement as village taxpayers will learn when theyre asked to shoulder for a period of two years a share of the costs in rebuilding the sewage disposal plant while this may represent a financial burden on some far better we say to assist with the expense than go it alone had no development of such size come on stream for lets face it the plant is worn put and major repairs if not a replacement would have been required a few years down the road while the development to us represents a major accomplishment for the town many do not see it this way critics and they may well represent the majority like stouffville the way it is just as they found it and they want it to remain this way but this cannot be for no municipality stands still it either moves ahead or slips back whitchurchstouffville the urban centre in particular was slipping back however through this development the brakes will be applied and well gradually move ahead into a new era of attainment and stability editors mail unites community old identities die hard recently we received an events calendar from the ministry of agriculture and food office- in uxbridgeseven of the eighteen activities listed on the schedule identified the organization as ontario county there was the ontario county holsteiri club- the ontario county soil and crop improvement association the ontario county cattlemens association and so on this is wrong its also confusing for ontario county is a thing of the past and has been for several years its now the region of durham and should be regarded as such taking the lead in straightening but this identity problem is the junior fanners- association the ontario county tag has been dropped and replaced with durham west we trust other organizations will do the same the namechange hangup isnt related to durham region alone york has also been slow to switch particularly the board of education it took trustees ten years to adopt j a regional identity a few groups still insist on county recognition v closer to home the twpv of whitchurch and the town of stouffville still rihgclear in casual conversations politically speaking j theres no such division but old customs die hard i dear mr thomas your calling of our community to offer prayer for the recovery of margie griffiths and courtney wallis was- appreciated by many a suggestion not really expected of a newspaper editor i cant imagine reading such an editorial in the star globe or sun perhaps thats what makes the tribune so special you obviously care about the people you write about sincerely dolores hill main street east stouffville dear jim the noticeboard at lloyd brittons auto sales is such a simple thing one would hardly expect it to command so much attention however its the talk of- the town ive actually seen motorists turn around and drive hack- to read the wording on the other side v perhaps without realizing it lloyd and marg brit ton along with daughter barbara are in their own way providing a- marvellous community service of course those of us who know them realize service is second nature to these fine folks j r- i k- sincerely jennifer hughes rr 2 stouffville- dear mr thomas our family spent the new years weekend out of town- on our return we noticed the sign board outside lloyd brittons auto sales that read lets all pray for marjorie and courtney naturally our interest was aroused however not until we picked up a copy of the tribune did we realize that marjorie griffiths and courtney wallis had been involved in a serious motor vehicle accident communication no matter what the form is a powerful force in any com munity because of it hundreds of prayers were undoubtedly said for these girls so highly respected by everyone lets all continue to pray for their complete recovery such faith can work wonders sincerely nancy jorgensen north street stouffville response could only happen in our town this is what makes stouffville so special the church community and its pastors along with your newspaper are continually showing leadership in areas of public concern i hepe this practice continues for it represents a driving force in accomplishing that which is good sincerely joanne myles stuart street stouffville dear editor in our church and undoubtedly others prayers were said- for the recovery of two local girls injured in a recent motor vehicle accident regardless of whether or not one believes in prayer theyefy fact the community of churches- reacts in such a manner is commendable in my opinion such in unison dear- jim i would like to take this opportunity to express my appreciation to the stouff ville public works department on monday january 11 they responded to an emergency call at my home after a water valve split in my basement two- men arrived very promptly and capped the broken line within minutes i believe they exceeded their responsibilities by reparingthe break and deserve some recognition for- their efforts thank you again keep up the good work v v- andrew cook cemetary lane stouffville tf f au ml m
